Canal tour in Tortuguero
Ya ha pasado mi primer mes en Costa Rica, y poco a poco voy acostumbrándome a la vida aquí entonces ahora estoy más acostumbrada a las clases y el trabajo de la universidad y también cómo viajar por el país. Este país está lleno de diversidad de naturaleza, lugares y gente que quiero experimentar cuando estoy aquí. ¡Tengo suerte estudiar en San José porque puede ir a algún lugar de aquí en autobús!
Enjoying life outside the city
El primer lugar fuera de San José que visitó fue Tortuguero que está en el Caribe donde puede ver los nidos de tortugas y también más naturaleza en el parque nacional. Fue un viaje bastante largo de San José porque decidieron que un autobús no fuera entonces teníamos que tomar dos autobuses en vez de uno para la primera parte del viaje. Después tomamos otro autobús antes de ir a Tortuguero en bote. ¡El viaje de bote ya se siente como una excursión de la naturaleza porque vimos un caimán! El parque nacional está lleno de canales entonces la primera excursión que hicimos fue un tour en bote dentro de los canales del parque nacional para ver a los animales. Me desperté a las cinco para este tour y vimos el amanecer sobre la playa en camino al tour. Vi muchas iguanas y pájaros durante el tour y también con mucha suerte un perezoso. Después de esto, experimentamos el parque nacional al pie para ver a más animales y más del parque – teníamos que llevar botas para conservar el parque. Vi unos monos en el parque y algunos de nuestro grupo vieron unos tucanes, pero yo no porque vimos unos monos al mismo tiempo, entonces sigue en mi lista de cosas por hacer antes de irme de Costa Rica, ¡ojalá una vez vea un tucán! Tuvimos mucha suerte con el tiempo cuando estaba en Tortuguero porque las guías dicen que llueve siempre allí pero solamente comenzó a llover cuando nos íbamos de Tortuguero. Por eso pasamos mucho tiempo en la playa también para descansar antes del comienzo de los estudios. ¡Tortuguero fue increíble y lo recomiendo a alguien que viene a Costa Rica!
The pacific!
Mi próximo viaje era en Dominical, esta vez en el pacífico y
solamente tiene que tomar un autobús aquí desde San José (¡aunque el autobús va a la frontera de Panamá entonces tiene que llevar un registro de dónde estás porque el conductor no siempre dice las paradas cómo enteraba algunos de nuestro grupo cuando estaban en camino a Panamá!). Esto fue un viaje más para descansar y surfear porque el pacífico tiene olas mejores para surfear – yo no sé cómo surfear entonces este viaje decidí de body board antes de que pruebe surfear. Dominical es un lugar super lindo y también mucho menos turístico que Tortuguero.

El fin de semana pasada fui a Esterillos Oeste en el pacífico que está más cerca a San José – solamente dos horas y medio de viaje. Esterillos Oeste es aún menos turístico que Dominical, es un pequeño pueblo al lado de la playa con un supermercado y pocos restaurantes. También e
s un buen lugar para surfear y descansar entonces disfrutó la playa y las piscinas naturales que aparecen cuando la marea es baja.

r cosa para experimentar más la cultura y la comida aquí, porque el caribe tiene comida y cultura diferente a la del pacifico. Tengo clases los martes, miércoles y jueves por la mañana entonces voy a aprovecharme de esto para viajar y experimentar más que Costa Rica ofrece.
Mientras viajó por el país los fines de semana, paso mi tiempo en las semanas estudiando y viviendo la vida universitaria. Tenía un periodo de gran adaptación al comienzo del semestre porque las clases aquí duran tres o cuatro horas y todo esto en español era difícil al comienzo, y también tenía que cambiar y arreglar mis cursos que era bastante estresante. Pero ahora estoy más acostumbrada al acento tico y tengo más confianza hablar en español por eso poco a poco puedo contribuir más a las clases. Tengo que hacer unas lecturas antes de mis clases que son super interesantes lo que también ayuda a mi español y me ayuda entender más las clases. Lo que todavía me confunda es la etiqueta de la universidad porque mucha gente está en su teléfono en la clase o entran muy tarde en la clase. La universidad es muy diferente aquí, pero poco a poco estoy acostumbrándome a ella.

My first month in Costa Rica has already gone by, and I am slowly getting used to life here, both the classes and university work, but also travelling around the country. This country is full of biodiversity, nature, places and people that I want to experience whilst I am here. I am lucky to be studying in San José because you can go anywhere from the capital by bus!
The first place outside of San José that I visited was Tortuguero which is on the Caribbean coast where you can see turtles’ nests and turtles laying their eggs, as well as more wildlife in the national park. It was quite a long journey from San José because we got to the bus station to find out the bus wasn’t running so we had to take two buses instead of one to get to the same place for the first part of the journey. After this it was one more bus to get to La Pavona where you get the boat to Tortuguero. The boat journey already felt like a tour of the wildlife because we saw a Cayman! The national park is full of canals so the first tour we did was a boat tour of the canals of the national park to see the animals. We had to wake up at 5am for the tour and so we saw the sunrise over the beach on the way to start the tour. I saw lots of iguanas and birds (once I kept my eyes peeled for the wildlife!) and also we were so lucky to see a sloth. Afterwards we experienced the national park by foot to see more animals na more of the park – some of our group saw toucans but I didn’t as we saw monkeys at the same time, so seeing a toucan is still on my list of things to do and see in Costa Rica before I leave! We were very lucky with the weather because all the guides say that it rains all the time in Tortuguero but it only started raining when we were leaving Tortuguero. So we spent a lot of time in the beach to relax before the start of the semester. Tortuguero was incredible and I recommend anyone who comes to Costa Rica goes there!
My next trip was to Dominical, on the pacific coast this time and only one bus away from San José (although the bus goes all the way to a border town on the border with Panama so you have to keep checking where you are because the bus driver doesn’t always let you know where he is stopping, as some of my group found out when they were on their way to Panama!) This trip was more to relax and enjoy surfing because the pacific has better waves for surfing – I don’t yet know how to surf entonces this trip I decided to take baby steps and tried body boarding before I learn to surf. Dominical was super pretty and a lot less touristy than Tortuguero.
Last weekend I went to Esterillas Oeste which is also on the pacific and much closer to San José – only 2 and a half hours by bus. Esterillas Oeste was even less touristy than Dominical, it is a super sleepy little town next to the beach with a supermarket and a few restaurants. It is also a good place for surfing and relaxing so I enjoyed spending time on the beach and in the natural pools which appear with low tide.
I have really enjoyed being able to travel on the weekends, I think it is the best thing for experiencing the cultura and the food here, because the Caribbean coast has different food and culture to the Pacific coast. I only have classes Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday morning so I am going to make good use of this to travel and experience all that Costa Rica has to offer.
Whilst travelling at the weekends, I spend my weekdays studying and living the student life. I had a big adjustment period at the start of the semester because the classes here last three or four hours, and entirely in Spanish which was difficult to start off with, and because I had to change and reorganise some of my courses to start off with. Now I am more accustomed the the Costa Rican accent and I am becoming more confident in speaking Spanish so little by little I am starting to contribute more to my classes. I have to do readings before my classes which are super interesting and which help improve my Spanish and my understanding during the classes. I am still baffled by the university etiquette here because people are always on their phones or turn up very late to class. University here is very different, but little by little I am getting used to it.
