This month was a month of weddings. I went to two weddings in Talat n Yakoub and it was my first experience of a Moroccan wedding. The first wedding was of Samira, a girl who was in my English class in 2019. In Morocco, many people rent clothes to wear to weddings and in my opinion this is a really good idea and better than buying new clothes each time. I wore a kaftan (Moroccan dress) for the first time.

IMG_2951The wedding was in Samira’s village which is very far away in the Atlas Mountains. In Moroccan weddings, the bride and groom sit on a big seat in front of the guests and the bride changes her kaftan three or maybe four times. The bridge and groom eat dates and drink milk, and afterwards they exchange rings. There aren’t any speeches like in UK weddings. At dinner time, the guests sit on the floor and share a tajine. After, there is ahwach (Amazigh music) and people play the drum, sing and dance.

In the same week, I went to the second wedding of my friend Khaoula, which was in her village in Talat n Yakoub. I went to her home the night before the wedding which is the time when the girls and women do henna and sing.

After the wedding in Morocco, the bride leaves her village and her family and goes to her husband’s house, and this time at the end of the wedding is a little bit upsetting because sometimes the bride cries because she is leaving her parents and her home.

At Khaoula’s wedding, I wore traditional Amazigh clothes with the girls (it is tradition that at the end of the wedding the girls dress in their traditional clothes). This is the outfit of Amazigh from the Souss, however each region has their own traditional outfit.
