No estaba seguro de qué esperar de España durante los meses de invierno, ya que para mí en
Inglaterra los meses de noviembre y diciembre tienen recuerdos vívidos de las fiestas navideñas,
bebidas calientes y un fuego cálido mientras miran al aire frío. A lo largo de octubre me costó
imaginar que una sensación similar llegara en Madrid porque el tiempo era todavía brillante. Sin
embargo, ahora el aire hace mucho más frío y las luces de Navidad y las decoraciones en las calles de
la ciudad traen nostalgia como si hubiera pasado el invierno aquí antes. La sensación festiva ya fluye
por la ciudad. A lo largo del mes de noviembre, me dediqué realmente a mi colocación laboral. He
disfrutado de la mayor responsabilidad que se me ha otorgado, y me hicieron responsable de una de
nuestras conferencias académicas, asegurando el buen funcionamiento del evento y que todos los
involucrados tenían lo que necesitaban.

Uno de los momentos más destacados del mes llegó temprano, con un viaje a la ciudad de montaña
brumosa de Cercedilla. Usé mi tarjeta de transporte para tomar un autobús durante una hora,
serpenteando por las montañas hacia el noroeste de Madrid. Mis amigos y yo exploramos la ciudad
con sus edificios históricos y el ferrocarril, antes de embarcarnos en una caminata de 3 horas por la
montaña. Vivir en el centro de una capital europea es una experiencia enriquecedora y
completamente agradable, pero hay nada que me ha gustado más que mis excursiones de un día a
los alrededores y explorar la naturaleza. El ambiente tranquilo de la montaña fue un descanso
refrescante de la ajetreada vida de la ciudad de Madrid, y el aire frío casi vino como un reajuste
sensorial de viajar en el bullicioso y cargado metro para trabajar toda la semana. Al día siguiente
viajé a Leganés, justo a las afueras de Madrid para un encuentro de final de liga contra el Málaga C.F.
Ver la diferencia en la cultura del fútbol entre España e Inglaterra fue perspicaz, y ver que a pesar de
las diferencias tienen la misma pasión por el juego hizo que fuera un placer estar involucrado.
Con varias fiestas nacionales a finales de mes, aproveché la oportunidad para reunirme con varios
amigos y compañeros de piso y explorar Casa de Campo, el parque público más grande de Madrid. El
área abarca 1722 hectáreas y no estábamos muy seguros de dónde empezar a mirar de un lugar
cinco veces el tamaño del Central Park de Nueva York. Aunque la casa solariega de la Casa de Campo
estaba cerrada debido a las vacaciones, exploramos la enorme zona verde que se encuentra a menos
de 20 minutos de mi piso en el centro. Después de un agotador paseo, tomamos un barco en el lago
por sólo 8 euros y vimos la más hermosa puesta de sol cubrir las nubes y el cielo arriba.

El mes fue completado con una increíble oportunidad para DJ en la popular estación de radio local
Radio Relativa. El set de 2 horas consistió en una hora de discos de vinilo soul, funk, reggae y disco
antes de una hora mostrando las canciones de los últimos 20 años que han utilizado la tecnología de
la música moderna para usar samples de estas canciones y mantenerlos vivos. Pasar este tiempo en
el estudio y hablar con los organizadores fue enormemente beneficioso para mi fluidez, ya que la
diferencia entre el español hablado en un entorno profesional y el entorno social se hizo evidente.
En resumen, el clima más frío que hemos visto aquí en Madrid este noviembre ha supuesto un
cambio interesante en las actividades que tienen lugar. Como las vacaciones están pronto quiería
seguir dando mi todo en la oficina y ganar tanta experiencia profesional como sea posible. Espero
continuar explorando las tradiciones y normas culturales a medida que nos acercamos a diciembre y
llega la Navidad.

After an exhausting hike, I was not one bit let down by the views.
I was unsure of what to expect from Spain during the winter months, as for me in England the
months of November and December have vivid memories of Christmas festivities, hot drinks and a
warm fire whilst staring out into the freezing air. Throughout October I found it hard to imagine that
a similar feeling would come in Madrid because the weather was still brilliant. Yet now, the air is
much colder and Christmas lights and decorations in the city streets bring nostalgia as if I have spent
the winter here before. The festive feeling is very much flowing through the city already. Throughout
the month of November, I really dedicated myself to my work placement. I have enjoyed the
increased responsibility that I am given, and I was made responsible for one of our academic
conferences, ensuring the smooth running of the event and that all involved had what they needed.
One of the highlights of the month came early, with a trip to the misty mountain town of Cercedilla. I
used my transport card to take a bus for one hour, winding up the mountains to the north-west of
Madrid. My friends and I explored the town with its historical buildings and railway, before
embarking on a 3 hour hike up the mountain. Living in the center of a European capital is an
enriching and thoroughly enjoyable experience, but I have loved nothing more than my day trips into
the surrounding areas and exploring nature. The peaceful mountainside was a refreshing break from
the busy city life of Madrid, and the cold air almost came as a sensory reset from riding on the busy,
stuffy metro to work all week. The next day I travelled to Leganés, just outside of Madrid for a
bottom of the league clash against Malaga C.F. Seeing the difference in football culture between
Spain and England was insightful, and to also see that despite the differences they have the same
passion for the game made it a pleasure to be in amongst it.
With several national holidays falling at the end of the month, I took the opportunity to round up
various friends and flat mates and explore Casa de Campo, Madrid’s largest public park. The area
spans 1722 hectares and we weren’t quite sure where to begin looking around somewhere five

closed due to the holiday, we explored the enormous green area that sits less than 20 minutes from
my flat in the center. After a tiring walk, we took a boat out on the lake for only 8 euros and watched
the most beautiful sunset cover the clouds and sky around us.
The month was rounded off with an incredible opportunity to DJ on popular local radio station Radio
Relativa. The 2-hour set consisted of an hour of soul, funk, reggae and disco vinyl records before an
hour showcasing the songs from the last 20 years that have used modern music technology to
sample these songs and keep them alive. Spending this time in the studio and speaking to the
organizers was hugely beneficial to my fluency, as the difference between the Spanish spoken in a
professional environment and the social environment became apparent.
In summary, the colder weather we have experienced here in Madrid this November has made an
interesting change to the activities that take place. As the holiday is on the horizon I plan to keep
giving my all in the office and gain as much professional experience as possible. I hope to continue
exploring the cultural traditions and norms as we head into December and Christmas edges nearer.
