Этот месяц был одним из самых насыщенных: я осмеливалась посещать церкви, музеи и ранее неизвестные уголки Санкт-Петербурга. В первый же выходные я посетила ‘большую тройку”: Исаакиевский собор, Храм Спасителя пролитой крови и Эрмитаж. Я приехала в Санкт-Петербург с семьей в 2016 году, однако теперь, когда я могу понимать и читать по-русски, это был совершенно другой опыт.
A true example of beautiful Russian architecture
Во-первых, был Спаса на Крови, чей главный шпиль в настоящее время восстанавливается, и хотя это изменяет внешний опыт, интерьер так же впечатляющ, как и всегда. Александр II был убит на том месте, где он был построен в память о нем. Я люблю яркие цвета и сверхъестественную архитектуру, встречающуюся в русских церквях, так непохожую на все, что я видела в Великобритании.
После этого я отправилась в Эрмитаж, чтобы в первый раз осмотреть Зимний дворец, в котором хранится так много прекрасных экспонатов и картин. Это будет один из многих визитов, так как мой хозяйка сказала, что это может занять целых 10 попыток, чтобы увидеть все правильно! Хотя выставки очень интересны, а картины очень красивы, главная привлекательность-само здание, золоченое и огромное. Трудно представить себе богатство и мастерство, затраченные на строительство дворца. Мы прошли из комнаты с впечатляющими потолочными окнами в другую, покрытую религиозными фресками, в полностью золотые бальные залы – я не могу поверить размаху здания или богатству династии Романовых.
Наконец, я побрела по Неве к Исаакиевскому собору, более готическому по стилю, но все же украшенному чудесной религиозной мозаикой, – я терзаюсь вопросом, какой собор я люблю больше. Я полагаю, что должен пойти снова, чтобы решить!
Я снова влюбился в Санкт-Петербург, он действительно является окном в Европу, сохраняя при этом русскую культуру, как и предполагал Петр Первый.

This month was one of exploration; I ventured to churches, museums, and previously unknown corners of St. Petersburg. In my first weekend I visited the ‘big three’; St Isaacs Cathedral, Saviour of the Spilled Blood, and the Hermitage. I came to St Petersburg with my family in 2016, however, it was a different experience entirely now that I can understand and read Russian.
First, was Saviour on the Spilled blood whose main spire is currently under restoration and though this alters the outward experience, the interior is just as spectacular as ever. Alexander II was murdered on the spot upon which it was built in his commemoration. I love the bright colours and over the top architecture found in Russian churches, so unlike anything I’ve seen at home.
After this, I wandered over to the Hermitage for my first look around the Winter Palace that houses so many beautiful artefacts and paintings. This will be one of many visits as my host said that it can take as many as 10 attempts to see everything properly! Though the exhibitions are very interesting and the paintings very beautiful, the main appeal is the building itself; gilded and vast. It is hard to comprehend the wealth and craftsmanship taken to construct the palace. We went from a room with spectacular skylights, to another covered in religious mural, to entirely gold ballrooms – I could not believe the scale of the building or wealth of the Romanov dynasty.
Finally, I strolled along the Neva to St Isaacs Cathedral which is more gothic in style but still decorated in wonderful religious mosaic – I find myself torn about which cathedral I love more. I suppose I must go again in order to decide!
I’ve fallen in love with Saint Petersburg all over again; it truly is a window to Europe whilst retaining Russian culture – just as Peter the first intended.
