Coimbra: as minhas primeiras observações.
Cheguei em Portugal (no aeroporto de Lisboa, para ser exato) para a clima fantástico. O sol estava brilhando e o meu aplicativo Snapchat informou que tinha 18 graus. No entanto, a minha atitude presumida desaparecereu quando eu me dei conta que o meu Português não era o que tinha sido 9 meses atrás em Manchester e que falar com alguém (para obter informações sobre um bilhete de tren para o comboio para Coimbra) seria difícil.
Isso aconteceu há duas semanas. Desde então, eu tenho chegado em Coimbra e tenho estado organizando a mim mesma e tentando melhorar a minha língua. Eu tenho um apartamento e agora tenho preparado a maior parte dos documentos que eu preciso para a universidade. Aqui estão algumas das observações que fiz no caminho:
1.) Chove no Portugal. Isso parece estúpido, mas antes de eu cheguei eu estava esperando a luz do sol constante. No entanto, dois dias depois de que chegasse começou uma semana de chuva constante. Eu não estive impressionado.
2.) Coimbra é muito montanhoso. Claro que eu soubesse Coimbra foi construído em um vale, mas eu não estava preparada para o esforço físico constante para ir a qualquer lugar a pé. Além de tudo isso, há 5 lances de escadas que precedem á universidade, issos são os 150 degraus. Eu considerei que aderir a um ginásio quando eu cheguei, mas eu decidi que isso não é necessário.
3.) Não há virtualmente nenhum pessoas inglês em Coimbra. Há muitos italianos, espanhóis e franceses, mas quase nenhum Inglês. Isto significa que quando se diz às pessoas que tu és Inglês, estão muitas vezes surpreendidos e interessados em falar comtigo e isto é bom.
4.) Todos os garotos chamam-se o João. Se se esquece o nome de alguém, prova João. Aparentemente, em Portugal existe uma lista de nomes e todos os pais têm de escolher um nome da lista para os seus filhos.
5.) Os Português tem um nível muito elevado de Inglês. Isso significa que muitas vezes quando eu tento falar com alguém em Português, por exemplo, para pedir algo num restaurante, eles vão responder automaticamente em Inglês. Não é o ideal para o meu Português, mas espero que quano o meu sotaque melhorar isso vai reduzir.

Coimbra: My first observations
I arrived in Portugal (in Lisbon airport to be exact) to fantastic weather. The sun was shining and my snapchat app informed that it was 18 degrees C. However, the smug attitude disappeared when I realised that my Portuguese was not what it had been 9 months ago in Manchester and that speaking to someone (to enquire about a ticket for the train to Coimbra) was going to be difficult.
This was two weeks ago. Since then, I have arrived in Coimbra and have been organising myself and trying to improve my language. I have a flat now and have most of the documents I need for university prepared. Here are some of the observations that I have made on the way:
- It rains in Portugal. This seems stupid but before I arrived I was expecting constant sunshine. However two days after I arrived a week of constant rain started. I was not impressed.
- Coimbra is VERY hilly. Of course I knew Coimbra was built in a valley but I was not prepared for the constant physical exertion to go anywhere by foot. On top of this, there are 5 flights of stairs leading up to the university, that’s 150 steps. I considered joining a gym when I arrived but I have decided that this is not necessary.
- There are virtually no English people in Coimbra. There are lots of Italians, Spaniards and French but hardly any English. This means that when you tell people you are English, they are often surprised and interested in talking to you which is nice.
- All the boys are called Joao. If you have forgotten the name of someone, try Joao. Apparently in Portugal there is a list of names and all parents have to choose a name from the list for their children.
- The Portuguese have a very high level of English. This means that often when I try to speak to someone in Portuguese, for example to order something in a restaurant, they will automatically reply in English. Not ideal for my Portuguese but hopefully as my accent improves this will reduce.
