The beginning of new academic year – and final year of my master’s degree! – has been keeping me busy with classes, readings and language study after a summer away from campus. I have been keeping an eye on the progress of my thesis and reflecting on how my thinking in seminars can also shape its direction. I am also in charge of an online welcome event for the new students to the master’s course and I have been organising the talks led by various members of the faculty. I know first-hand how difficult it can be to start a master’s course online during a pandemic so I thought I would volunteer to help the new students get to know the current community. I have also been offered a part-time position assisting a class taught to undergraduate students which I will begin later this year. This will be a good opportunity to get some insight into how university teaching operates on the other side of things! I hope it will give me some insight into career in academia and researcher as I am interested in knowing more about a variety of potential career paths that I may wish to pursue. This month I was able to catch a screening of an independent film that I had been excited about for a while. It is a short-film that looks at the discrimination that mixed-race Japanese people face in Japanese society. I was able to catch a screening attended by the cast and director of the film and I had a very inspiring chat with the director about his motivations for creating the film and the messages he wished to convey to audiences. I thought the film very skilfully addressed factors of race and class differences that affects the treatment that different mixed-race Japanese people may face. As it is my final year of my course, I am reflecting more and more on the next steps I want to take in my career. But one thing is definitely for certain: I want to continue to dedicate myself to the study of Japanese to increase the opportunities available to me in the future.
キャンパスから夏の間離れた後、新学年の始まり（しかも修士課程の最後の年です！）はクラス、リーディング、日本語学習で忙しく過ごしています。修士論文の進歩に目を配りながら、セミナーの中で考えていることがどの方向に形作っていくか考えています。また、修士の新入生のためのオンラインのウェルカムイベントを担当したり、学部のメンバーのトークをオーガナイズしたりしています。パンデミックの中オンラインで修士課程を始めることの難しさを自分自身で知っているので、新入生がコミュニティになじめるようにボランティアしようと思いました。 また、学部生のクラスのアシスタントとしてパートタイムのポジションのオファーをもらったので、今年の終わりの方にそれが始まります。これは、大学での授業がどのように進むのか、逆の視点から見ることができるいい機会だと思います！キャリアパスのオプションについてもっと知りたかったので、この経験を通じて、アカデミアやリサーチャーとしてのキャリアのインサイトを得られるといいと思いました。 今月、ずっと見たかったインディペンデント映画を見ることができました。この映画は、ミックスルーツの日本人が受ける差別について表現したショートフィルムです。映画のキャストとディレクターがスクリーニングに来ていたので、ディレクターの方と、映画を作った動機や観客に伝えたかったメッセージについて興味深い会話ができました。ミックスルーツの日本人が受ける人種や階級の違いによる扱いの違いについて、とてもよく表現できていると思いました。 今年がこのコースの最後の年なので、キャリアの次のステップについて考えることが多くなっています。ですが、一つは確実にいえることがあります：将来の機会を増やすために日本語の勉強を続けることです。
