Moin Zusammen,
ich hoffe ihr habt alle eine Weihnachtszeit und einen guten Rutsch in das Jahr 2023 gehabt. Für mich ging es schnell wieder los an der Universität Rostock. Am 04.01.2023 hatte ich schon meine ersten Vorlesungen dieses Jahres. In diesem Monat hat sich der Anspruch an Uni Arbeit deutlich erhöht. Das ist so, denn am Ende dieses Monats endet die Vorlesungszeit des ersten Semesters. Das heißt, ab Februar fangt die Prüfungsphase an. Aber das Ganze ist ein Thema, dass ich in meinen nächsten monatlichen Beitrag besprechen werde. Heute möchte ich euch ein wenig darüber erzählen, was ich in meiner Freizeit gemacht habe (außer fleißig für die Uni zu lernen). 
Als erstes möchte ich euch den “Kampf der Institute” vorstellen. Diesen “Kampf” hat an einem regnerischen Abend am Samstag des Vierten Januars in dem Auditorium Maximum (Audimax) stattgefunden. Das Audimax ist der größte Hörsaal der Universität Rostock mit einer Kapazität von 500 Leuten! Hier sind die fünf Teams von den fünf verschiedenen Instituten der Mathematische-Naturwissenschaftliche Fakultät (MNF) gegeneinander angetreten. Die fünf dazugehörigen Institute sind: Mathematik, Physik, Chemie, Informatik und Biochemie. Der “Kampf” war kein echter Kampf, sondern eher ein Art Quizshow. Dabei mussten verschiedene Herausforderungen gemeistert und Fragen beantwortet werden, um Punkte für Ihr Team zu sammeln. In jedem Team gab es 4 Studierende plus einen Platz für ein Dozent. Leider haben nur die Teams der Mathematik und der Chemie es geschafft, einen Dozent davon zu überzeugen mitzumachen. Den Teams und Zuschauern wurde es empfohlen die Farbe ihres jeweiligen Instituts zu tragen. Deswegen bin ich in meinem weißen T-Shirt hingegangen, weil Weiß die Farbe für das Physik Institut war, welche ich natürlich anfeuern wollte! Der Abend hat durchaus Spaß gemacht und am Ende wurde das Physik-Team Zweiter, obwohl Sie bis zur letzten Runde führten. Ich habe viele Leute von verschiedenen Instituten kennengelernt und es war wirklich eine tolle Gelegenheit meinen sozialen Kreis zu erweitern.
Als nächstes kommen wir zu einem Ritual das sich bei meiner Freundesgruppe entwickelt hat. Jeden zweiten Donnerstag fahren wir, unabhängig vom Wetter, mit der S-Bahn nach Warnemünde. Dort gehen wir in der Ostsee baden. Diesem Monat haben wir es zweimal geschafft, trotz der eisigen Kälte unser Ritual zu bewahren und haben jeweils ein paar Minuten im 4°C kaltem Wasser gebadet. Es ist eine komische aber tolle Erfahrung: nach einigen Sekunden im Wasser spürt man nur noch wie es brennt, aber nachdem man rauskommt, gibt es ein seltsames Gefühl während der Tastsinn langsam zu einem zurückkehrt. Man muss natürlich aufpassen nicht zu lange im Wasser zu bleiben, denn bei solchen Temperaturen gibt es eine echte Gefahr der Erfrierung. Deswegen bleiben wir bei solchen Wassertemperaturen nie länge als fünf Minuten im Wasser.

I hope you have all had a lovely Christmas and good start into 2023. For me, things got going again quickly at the university of Rostock. I already had my first lectures of the year on the 04.01.2023. This month the demand of my university work has increased significantly. This is due to the Lecture period for the first semester ending at the end of the month. That means, as of February the Exam period starts. But that is all a theme will I will cover in my next monthly report. Today I would like to tell you a little bit of what it is I do in my free time (other than studying for uni).
Firstly, I’d like to introduce you to the “Battle of the institutes”. This “Battle” took place on a rainy evening on Saturday the fourteenth of January in the Auditorium Maximum (Audimax). The Audimax is the biggest lecture hall of the University of Rostock with a capacity of 500 people! This is where the five teams of the five different Institutes of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (MNF) competed against one another. The five Institutes belonging to this Faculty are: Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Computer Science and Biology. The “battle” wasn’t a real battle but rather a type of Quiz show. Challenges were to be completed and questions answered in order to collect points for your team. In each team there were 4 students and one place for a lecturer. Unfortunately, only the Maths and Chemistry teams managed to convince a lecture to take part. The teams and viewers were recommended to wear the colours of their Institute. That’s why I went in my white T-Shirt, because white was the colour of the Physics Institute, who I of course wanted to cheer on! The evening was a lot of fun and in the end the Physics team came second, even though they were leading up until the last round. I met lots of people from different Institutes and it was a great experience to expand my social circle.
Next, we come to a ritual which has developed itself in my friends’ group. Every second Thursday, no matter what the weather, we get on the S-Bahn and go to Warnemünde. It’s here that we go swimming in the Baltic Sea. Twice this month we managed to keep our ritual despite the freezing cold and swam in the 4°C Water for a few minutes. It’s a weird but great experience: after a few seconds in the water, you feel little other than burning, but after coming back out there’s a strange sensation as the sense of touch slowly returns to you. careful not to stay too long in the water, since by such temperatures there is a real danger of getting Frostbite. That’s why we never stay in the water for longer than five minutes by such cold temperatures.
