يشتهر الأردن بصحاريه و مع
ذلك فثلج هنا في عمّان. منذ أربع أسابيع، كان عندنا يومان الثلج. ألغت صفوف و غلّقت الحكومة معظم المدينة. كانت هذان اليومان غير عاديين مع أنّهما كانتا باردين في البنايات التي بنيت لحرارة الصيف. بعد الأسبوع، استكشفت الصحارء في وادي روم في الشمس الجميلة و بلغت درجة الحرارة منتصف العشرينات. الطقس استمرّ في التغيير في حين قدرتي على اللغة العربية استمرّت في التحسين. كان هذا الشهر مثيرا للاهتمام في عمّان.
اللغة العربية طيف متكوّن أنواع أشكال اللغة المختلفة. صفوفي في الصباح يوميا تركز على الفصحى التي تعتمد على لغة القران العربية. هي اللغة الرسمية و تستخدم للصحف و للأدب و على التليفزيون خلال العالم العربي. تطوّر الصفوف مهاواتي الفصحى بالتركيز على تعلم الجمل المعقدة الكثيرة حتى أستطيع أن أقرأ و أستمع لأنواع النصوص المختلفة و أن أطور تمييز تكلمي و كتابي. نقضي وقت طويل في تعلم أوزان اللغة العربية. تعتمد أفعال اللغة العربية على الجذر و من الممكن تخمين معنى الأفعال بعلم الجذر و الوزن. لولا الأوزان لاستغرق تعلم المفردات وقت طويل. نستخدم مواضيع ثقافية لدراسة المفردات الجديدة. مثلا، تدرّس مفردات الرحيل بالتعلم عن ابن بطوطة الذي كان راحل عربي في العصور الوسطي أو مفردات الصحافة و الحكومة بالقراءة عن تاريخ الصحيفة و المجلات النسائية في الشرق الأوسط.
تعلم الفصحى مفيد جدا بالرغم من أحتاج أن أستخدم نوع مختلف للغة العربية حين أتكلم مع ناس عادة. عاميتي أردنية تتطور بصفوف في بعد الظهر و بالتطور لمركز حماية و حرية الصحفيين. تساعدني الصفوف للتكلم مع ناس على الشارع. التطوع فرضة عظيمة لتحدث مع ناس في المكتب. تطوعي يتكون بحث التحديات لصحفيين في الأردن و إعداد المشاريع الجديدة و كتاب طلبات التمويل. هذا الشغل ممتع جدا و أصحبت أهتمّ بحالة الصحفيين في الأردن و الشرق الأوسط.
استطاعت أن أستكشف الأردن بالإضافة إلى دراستي. كان عندي عطلة عظيمة حين رحلت وادي روم. كان هذا مكان حيث صوّرت حرب النجوم و لورنس العرب. ركبنا جمال و خيّمنا في الصحراء و قضينا وقت مع البدو. زرت بترا أيضا. كان عجيب كيف الأنقاض المشهورة ظهرت في نهاية الوادي الذي تمشي فيه. أتطلع إلى التجارب الجديدة في الشهر القادم ولكن أتمنى أن يصبح الطقس أحرّ!

Learning Arabic in the Snow
Jordan is famous for its deserts, nevertheless it snowed here in Amman! Four weeks ago, we had a couple of days of snow. Classes were cancelled and the government shut down most of the city. It was an unusual few days although cold inside buildings built for the heat of Summer. A week later, I was exploring the desert at Wadi Rum in beautiful sunshine, and the temperature was in the mid twenties! The weather may have kept changing but my Arabic has been steadily improving. It certainly has been an interesting month in Amman.
The Arabic language is a spectrum consisting of a variety of different forms of the language. My daily classes in the morning focus on Modern Standard Arabic which is based on the Classical Arabic of the Quran. It is a formal language used in newspapers, literature and most books and on television across the Arab world. The classes develop my Modern Standard Arabic skills through focusing on learning more and more complex sentence structures that allow me to read and listen to different types of texts and to develop how specific my writing and speaking are. We also spend a lot of time learning about Arabic’s pattern system. Verbs are based on three letter roots and it is possible to guess the meaning of verbs through knowing its root and its pattern. Without the patterns, learning vocabulary would take a long time. We learn new vocabulary through cultural topics. For example, the vocabulary around travelling was taught through learning about Ibn Battuta, the great Arab explorer of the Middle Ages, or the vocabulary about journalism and government was taught through reading about the history of the newspaper and of women’s magazines in the Middle East.
Learning Modern Standard Arabic is very useful and fascinating but I need to use a different part of the spectrum of Arabic to talk with people in an everyday context. My spoken Jordanian dialect is being developed through classes in the afternoon and through volunteering with a Jordanian NGO, called the Centre for Defending Freedom of Journalists. The classes help me to speak with people on the street. The volunteering is a great opportunity to converse with people in the office. My volunteering consists of researching the challenges facing journalists in Jordan, designing new projects and writing funding applications. It is very enjoyable work and I have become interested in the situation of journalists in Jordan and the Middle East.
I have been able to explore Jordan as well as my studying. I had a fantastic weekend in Wadi Rum, the place where Star Wars and Lawrence of Arabia was filmed. We rode camels, camped in the desert, spent time with the Bedouin. I have also visited Petra. It was wonderful how the famous ruins appeared at the end of canyon that you walk down. I am looking forward to new experiences in the next month but I hope that the weather becomes warmer!
