Concepto cultural – ‘puente’
‘Puente’ se refiere al concepto de un período de días de fiesta o vacaciones que se forma al unir un día festivo con otro, especialmente si el día festivo cae en un martes o jueves. Es un hecho conocido que en España, hay casi doble el número de días festivos en comparación con el Reino Unido, aunque depende de cada región. En España los días festivos se separan en dos categorías, días nacionales y días regionales porque hay comunidades autónomas que tienen sus propios días festivos, como el Día de Andalucía el 28 de febrero, donde lo celebran solamente los andaluces. Este año el Día de Los Santos (el 1 de Noviembre) cayó en un martes y significó que los trabajadores españoles pusieron aprovechar del ‘puente’ y coger un día fuera del trabajo el lunes. Está claro que no todos los españoles cogen el ‘puente’ pero es un concepto reconocido por el país. En año pasado hubo un debate en el parlamento español sobre poner todos los días festivos en un lunes pero al final no cambió nada.
Turismo:
La idea principal del ‘puente’ es fomentar el turismo por el país, por ejemplo, un compañero mío fue de vacaciones al norte de España cuatro días. La industria del turismo es la industria que contribuye más al PIB español y aunque crea días no laborales, quizás podamos ver los beneficios económicos en el turismo.
Negocio:
La desventaja principal del ‘puente’ es su impacto en el mundo comercial. Trabajé el lunes 31 de Octubre y fue difícil contactar con unos proveedores españoles. También era muy tranquilo en las oficinas de mi trabajo, pero así, tuve la oportunidad para trabajar solo y acabar mis propias tareas. Pero en general, el concept crea dos días no laborales en lugar de uno y puede perjudicar la productividad.
Desde mi punto de vista, no me gusta el concepto del ‘puente’ a causa de la bajada en productividad y el aumento en la cantidad de trabajo a finales de la semana. El próximo ‘puente’ cae en diciembre y a lo mejor aproveche para viajar un par de días, supongo que tiene sus aspectos positivos también!

Cultural Concept – Puente
‘Puente’ literally translated into English means bridge and it refers to the concept of combining bank holidays with taking time off work, especially if these days fall on a Tuesday or Thursday. It’s a well-known fact that in Spain, there are almost double the number of bank holidays to that back in the United Kingdom, depending on which part of Spain you live in. Bank holidays are separated into National Days and Regional Days as in some cases specific regions have their own days, such as Andalucia Day on the 28th of February, which is only celebrated in Andalucia. This year the Day of the Saints (1st November) fell on a Tuesday, meaning that workers in Spain could take advantage of the ‘puente’ by taking a day off work on the Monday. Of course, not all Spanish workers do this but it is a well-recognised concept across the county. Last year there was a debate in Spanish Parliament about banning this concept and having all bank holidays on a Monday but no changes were made.
Tourism:
The main idea of ‘puente’ is to promote tourism across the country, for example, a work colleague of mine was able to spend 4 days on holiday in the north of Spain. The tourism industry is the biggest contributor to Spanish GDP so even though ‘puente’ creates an extra day off work, economic benefits through tourism may still be seen.
Business:
The main disadvantage of ‘puente’ is its impact on business. I worked on Monday the 31st of October and it was difficult to contact some Spanish suppliers that I work with. It was also very quiet in the offices of the business I work in, although it did provide me with some time alone to get to work on some of my own tasks. The concept creates two non-working days rather than just one which can damage productivity.
From a personal point of view, I’m not a fan of the ‘puente’ concept. The general drop in productivity and the higher workload later on in the week that it creates unnecessarily are my main reasons for this. The next ‘puente’ falls in December and maybe I will make the most of it and go travelling for a few days, I suppose it does have its positive aspects as well!
