Como un amante del futbol y de los viajes, mi estancia en España me ha dado muchas oportunidades para juntar mis dos pasatiempos favoritos en varias ocasiones. Actualmente estoy en Madrid, la ciudad de dos de los tres equipos más grandes de España así que esperarías que escriba sobre unas visitas al Santiago Bernabéu y al Vicente Calderón. Aunque he disfrutado un par de partidos de Champions League en estos estadios y me encantaría escribir sobre ellos, no sería una perspectiva verdadera de mis creencias en relación con el futbol. En 2016 he estado viendo partidos en sitios desde El Nuevo Arcángel hasta El Estadio de Santo Domingo y desde Los Carmenes hasta El Carlos Tartiere.
El Nuevo Arcángel – Córdoba
Gracias al grupo Erasmus en Córdoba, fue el primero estadio que visité durante mi estancia Erasmus, incluso tuve la suerte de hacer un tour del estadio y conocer a los jugadores. Por desgracia, bajó el Córdoba de La Liga el año pasado así que no iba a ver equipos como el Real Madrid o el Barcelona allí, sin embargo, aproveché para ver un estadio nuevo. Tres meses después del tour, vi mi primer partido en El Arcángel, el partidazo entre Córdoba, en la zona de acenso, y Albacete, en la zona de bajada. El partido no terminó como creía porque ganó el Albacete en el último minuto.
Los Carmenes – Granada
Mi visita a Los Carmenes en Granada era inesperada pero si hay una cosa que he aprendido durante mi estancia en España es que las cosas imprevistas son las mejores. Después de pasar el día de paseo en El Albaicín (un barrio famoso de Granada), quería descansar con unos amigos y fuimos a ver un partido. Nuestra actividad antes de ver el partido fue probar el tapas famoso de Granada a lado del estadio y la comida cumplió sus expectativas, especialmente las Berenjenas! Había mucho ambiente porque tenía que ganar el Granada para evitar descenso a La Liga Segunda y la afición cantó durante todo el partido. Metió dos goles Las Palmas en los primeros doce minutos y creía que iba a perder el Granada, sin embargo, no tenía razón…
Resultado – Granada 3-2 Las Palmas
El Santo Domingo – Alcorcón
Alcorcón, uno de los equipos profesionales de Madrid menos conocidos, tarda unos 30 minutos de tren desde Madrid centro. Ya que estoy trabajando en Madrid y me considero un fan del Córdoba, no podía rechazar la oportunidad de ver un partido suyo porque se juega al lado. Después de trabajar todo el día, me puse la camiseta verde otra vez para animar al equipo andaluz. Aproximadamente 600 fans viajaron a Madrid desde Córdoba y había mucho ambiente entre los cordobeses. Para mí lo mejor de todo fue poder cantar el himno de Córdoba otra vez, me sentía como había vuelto al sur. Podría ganar el Córdoba a pesar del frio, un miércoles por la noche en Madrid? Claro que sí!
Resultado – Alcorcón 0-1 Córdoba
Mi decisión viajar a Oviedo fue muy espontánea porque compré los billetes del tren un par de días antes de realizar el viaje. Después de pasar la mayoría de mi tiempo en el sur de España, ya era hora de experimentar el norte. El paisaje que vi desde mi asiento en el tren durante el viaje a Oviedo fue increíble, especialmente de las montañas. Como siempre, cuando vaya a un sitio nuevo, me gusta probar la gastronomía local y en Oviedo, aconsejo que se pruebe el Cachopo! Igual que cuando fui a Alcorcón, quería que mi visita al Carlos Tartiere coincidiera con el partido contra el Córdoba. Me encantó mi viaje a Oviedo y como se puede ver en la foto, salí en la tele!

Para mí ha sido muy especial tener la oportunidad de poder visitar estos sitios. Hay una pasión y ambiente en los estadios pequeños de España que no se puede replicar en un estadio como el Santiago Bernabéu. Muchos de mis amigos españoles dicen que estoy loco por seguir el Córdoba por el país pero de verdad, es una excusa para visitar nuevos sitios que nunca habría visitado. Próxima parada, Valladolid.

As a huge lover of football and travelling, my time here in Spain has given me the opportunity to combine two favourite hobbies on various occasions. As I’m currently in Madrid, home to arguably two of the three biggest football clubs in Spain, you will probably expect this months report to contain stories about trips to the Santiago Bernabéu and the Vicente Calderón. As much as I enjoyed a couple of Champions League games in both stadiums and would be more than happy to write about them, it wouldn’t be an accurate reflection about my footballing beliefs. My 2016 journey has taken me from El Nuevo Arcángel to El Estadio de Santo Domingo and from Los Carmenes to El Carlos Tartiere.
El Nuevo Arcángel – Córdoba
This was the first new ground I visited here in Spain and thanks to the Erasmus association in Córdoba, I was lucky enough to go on a guided tour of the ground and meet the players. Unfortunately, Córdoba got relegated from the Spanish first division last year so there was no chance of me being able to see a Real Madrid or Barcelona type team there, however, I certainly made the most of the opportunity to visit a new place. It wasn’t until three months after the tour in which I got to watch a game there, I had the mouth-watering tie of promotion-chasing Córdoba against a relegation-threatened Albacete. The game didn’t quite go to plan with Albacete snatching a late winner.
Final score – Córdoba 2-3 Albacete
Los Carmenes – Granada
My visit to Los Carmenes, Granada, was rather unexpected but if there’s one thing I’ve learnt from my time abroad it’s that you have more fun when you improvise rather than when you stick to concrete plans. After spending the day touring El Albaicín (a neighbourhood within Granada city centre), it was time to relax and watch a bit of football. Our pre-match activity involved a quick visit to a few bars near the ground to try the famous tapas of Granada. The tapas certainly lived up to expectation and I would definitely recommend it, especially the Berenjenas! The match had a great atmosphere as it was a must-win game for relegation-threatened Granada, with fans acting as the twelfth man for all 90 minutes of the game. After seeing Granada go 1-0 down very early on it was almost inevitable that they would go on to lose the game, however, my prediction turned out to be wrong…
Final score – Granada 3-2 Las Palmas
El Santo Domingo – Alcorcón
Alcorcón, one of Madrid’s lesser known teams, is about a 30 minute journey from the city centre. As I’m currently working in Madrid and have been converted into a FC Córdoba fan, it was hard for me to turn down the opportunity of going to watch them play half an hour down the road. After a long days work it was time to put on that green shirt again and cheer on the boys from Andalucía. Around 600 Córdoba fans made the journey up to Alcorcón and the atmosphere was great. The best part of the game was getting to sign the anthem of Córdoba again. I felt like I’d gone back to the south, a flashback to my Erasmus period. The only question was, could they really win on a cold, Wednesday night in Madrid? Of course they could!

El Carlos Tartiere – Oviedo
My trip to Oviedo was a spur of the moment decision, and it was my first time ever in Asturias. After spending so much time in the south of Spain, it was about time I found out what northern Spain had to offer. The scenery of the mountains was incredible and the city was really pretty. As with every new place, trying the local cuisine is one of the most important things that I do. My favourite dish was definitely Cachopo! Just like when I visited Alcorcon, I made sure that going to Oviedo coincided with their game against FC Córdoba. The trip turned out to be a huge success and as shown in the photo, I even made it on TV!

Being able to visit all these places has been very special for me. There is a passion and an atmosphere in the smaller Spanish football clubs that quite simply, cannot be replicated in a place like Real Madrid. A lot of my Spanish friends say that I’m crazy for following FC Córdoba around the country but if I’m being honest, it’s one of the best excuses for going to visit new places which I simply wouldn’t have been to otherwise. Next stop, Valladolid.
