Da quando sono arrivato a Bologna il 1° febbraio il tempo è assolutamente volato. Ora sto davvero iniziando ad adattarmi alla vita in questa bellissima città. L’inizio di questo scambio per me segna una tappa entusiasmante nel mio viaggio con la lingua italiana che ho intrapreso negli ultimi 4 anni.
La portata di questa opportunità non può essere sottovalutata. Ho già avuto innumerevoli opportunità di praticare il mio italiano in così tante nuove situazioni e sto già iniziando a sentire che posso comunicare in modo più spontaneo e di conseguenza esprimermi più liberamente. È un grande presagio per i 6 mesi a venire e sono davvero entusiasta di vedere come le mie abilità linguistiche migliorano in questo periodo.
Ho trascorso molto tempo a imparare l’italiano in una sorta di zona di comfort per l’apprendimento delle lingue. Online, a distanza dalla cultura stessa. Ora mi trovo ogni giorno in situazioni in cui sono costretto a uscire da quella zona di comfort. Questo è sia stimolante che gratificante. Per la prima volta nella mia vita sono in grado di usare la lingua per navigare nella vita. Ad esempio, al mio arrivo ho sostenuto un colloquio per il permesso di soggiorno che si è svolto in inglese. Ho sentito la mia intervistatrice lamentarsi con una collega che non riusciva a capire il mio inglese britannico, quindi ho suggerito di continuare in italiano. È stato interessante vedere come l’atmosfera sia cambiata da fredda e formale a aperta e calorosa proprio perché l’intervistatore si sentiva a suo agio nel parlare la propria lingua madre. Mi ha mostrato quanto siano importanti le lingue sia a livello funzionale che personale.
Non vedo l’ora di vedere e raccontare il mio viaggio di apprendimento delle lingue e dove mi porterà a Bologna e in tutta Italia!

Since I arrived in Bologna on the 1st of February the time has absolutely flown by. I feel now that the dust is starting to settle and I’m really starting to adapt to life in this amazing city. The start of this exchange for me marks an exciting milestone in my journey with the Italian language that I have been on for the last 4 years.
The extent of this opportunity can’t be understated. I’ve already had countless opportunities to practice my Italian in so many new situations and I’m already starting to feel that I can communicate more spontaneously and express myself more freely as a result. It’s a great omen for the 6 months to come and I’m really excited to see how my language skills improve in this time.
I have spent a lot of time learning Italian in a kind of language learning comfort zone. Online, at a distance from the culture itself. Now I’m in situations everyday in which I am forced out of that comfort zone. That is both challenging and rewarding. For the first time in my life I am able to use the language to navigate life. For example, on my arrival I attended an interview for a residency permit which was conducted in English. I heard my interviewer complain to a colleague that she couldn’t understand my British English so I suggested we continue in Italian. It was interesting to see how the atmosphere changed from cold and formal to open and warm just because the interviewer felt at ease speaking their mother tongue. It showed me how important languages are on both a functional and personal level.
