My second month in Bologna

Italian:

Marzo è stato un mese molto impegnativo, con molte nuove esperienze e molte opportunità per immergermi ancora di più nella lingua italiana. Ho seguito lezioni insegnate esclusivamente in italiano, quindi ho usato la lingua per imparare e partecipare in classe. Nonostante io sia stato in questa situazione per un breve periodo, vedo i miglioramenti già.

Sarebbe difficile trovare un’ambiente più adatto all’imprendimento duna lingua! Mi ha davvero costretto ad usare la lingua in modi che non avevo mai fatto prima, mettendo alla prova i miei limiti. C’è una sorta di pregiudizio dei madrelingua inglesi nel poter utilizzare la nostra lingua madre in qualsiasi situazione e comunque essere compresi. Ovviamente, per chi impara una lingua, questo deve essere evitato ad ogni costo. Essere in questo ambiente mi costringe a superare questo ostacolo. Penso che sia importante non solo perché dobbiamo fare pratica il più possibile, ma anche perché l’utilizzo dell’inglese ci impedisce di sviluppare le abilità linguistiche che ci aiutano a superare i nostri punti deboli per esprimerci. Imparando queste abilità è ciò che rende un parlante fluente di una lingua.

Ma sembra essere una questione di fiducia quanto di capacità linguistiche. È facile arrendersi e parlare in inglese invece di faticare nella lingua target. Spingendomi in queste situazioni e sopportando l’imbarazzo (e le pause leggermente scomode!), il mio italiano sta diventando sempre migliore ogni giorno.

Mentre mi sono concentrato molto nell’imparare la lingua, ho anche potuto esplorare! Uno dei momenti più speciali finora è stata un’escursione che mi ha portato dalla Piazza Maggiore, attraverso i famosi portici di Bologna, all’impressionante Santuario di San Luca che domina la città. Un’escursione che consiglio vivamente – e se hai ancora energie una volta raggiunta la cima, puoi continuare lungo la Via degli Dei fino a Firenze! (solo per quelli forti di cuore!)

March has been a very busy month – with lots of new experiences and lots of opportunities for me to immerse myself further in the Italian language. I have been taking classes taught solely in Italian so using the language to learn and participate in class. Despite only having been in this situation for a short time I am already seeing improvements. 

You could hardly find a more immersive environment for learning a language! It’s really forced me to use the language in ways that I never have done before so really tested my limits. Outside of such a setting there is a kind of English native speakers prerogative in being able to default to our native language in any situation and still be understood. Obviously for a language learner that is to be avoided at all costs. Being in this environment forces me to overcome that. I think it’s important not only because we need to practice our target language as much as possible but also for the fact that defaulting to English stops us from developing the linguistic abilities that help us get around our weak points in order to express ourself. And those abilities are what makes a fluent speaker of a language. 

But it seems to be a question of confidence as much as linguistic ability. It’s easy to just give up and speak English instead of fumbling through in our target language. By pushing myself in these situations and enduring the awkwardness (and the slightly uncomfortable pauses!) my Italian is becoming better every day.

While I’ve been very focused on improving my language skills I’ve also been able to explore! One of the highlights so far has been a hike that took me from Piazza Maggiore, through the famous portici of Bologna ,to the awe-inspiring Sanctuary of San Luca that overlooks the city.  A hike that I would highly recommend – and if you still have energy once you reach the top then you can continue along la Via degli Dei all the way to Florence! (the faint of heart need not apply)
