Ce mois-ci, on a vécu une période des grèves sans précédentes et monumentales à Paris, même partout la France. Des milliers des personnes ont manifesté pendant le mois de décembre (et maintenant, de janvier), contre le projet de réforme des retraites. Ils ont annulé la majorité des transports publics à Paris, sauf les lignes 1 et 14 du métro. Cependant, malgré les difficultés, on a essayé d’en profiter au maximum.
Surtout, le patinage au Grand Palais était mon meilleur souvenir de ces vacances. C’est la plus grande patinoire au monde, (c’était vraiment gigantesque !) dans un endroit absolument magnifique avec une grande boule disco au milieu de la patinoire. Alors qu’on a fait du patin à glace, on a regardé des mecs très drôles qui ont fait des pirouettes et des tours incroyables pour effectuer une vidéo YouTube. Leur petit spectacle était hilarant mais on était vraiment jaloux de leurs capacités, cependant j’ai beaucoup aimé tourner en rond avec mes copines. Je peux admettre qu’on a bien ri en essayant d’avoir l’air professionnel, même si on est tombés trop de fois pour compter.
De plus, j’ai visité quelques-uns des nombreux marchés de Noël à Paris. Mon préféré était Le Marché de Noël de La Défense parce qu’on pouvait marcher parmi une gamme des stands, de bijouterie et des produits locaux faits à la main, aux vins et spiritueux. Il y a eu la meilleure sélection de nourriture que je n’avais jamais vu dans un marché, la nourriture du monde entier, mais on a choisi un sandwich jambon-Raclette qui a été français et délicieux. En plus, j’ai acheté plusieurs cadeaux de Noël, un collier pour ma mère et des boules de Noël pour mes grands-parents, comme des petits souvenirs de mon année à l’étranger.
Malheureusement, on a encore du travail pendant la période des fêtes de Noël, mais en tout cas j’ai essayé de m’imprégner de l’ambiance festive. Les soirées à Châtelet – Les Halles étaient plein d’un esprit festif et on a dansé à la musique de Noël – on a même découvert des chants de Noël français ! En plus, il y a eu des opportunités de regarder la belle décoration de Noël, par exemple les arbres de Noël à la Place du Panthéon devant la Bibliothèque Saint-Geneviève étaient merveilleux et j’ai aimé les regarder après une longue journée d’études. Je devais aller à La Tour Eiffel aussi pour m’adonner au verre de vin chaud avec la plus belle vue de la ville, et évidemment, j’ai profité des soldes du lendemain de Noël et de la nouvelle année aux Galeries Lafayette.
Alors, malgré les grèves, j’ai profité de Paris pendant la période de Noël, et j’ai beaucoup hâte de mon deuxième semestre ici !

This month, we experienced an unprecedented and monumental period of strikes in Paris and throughout the whole of France. Thousands of people protested during the month of December (and now, in January too), against the pension reform. In Paris, they cancelled most of the public transport, except the metro lines 1 and 14. However, despite the difficulties, we tried to make the most of it.
Ice-skating at the Grand Palais was above all my favourite memory of these holidays. It is the biggest indoor ice-skating rink in the word, (it truly was huge!) in an absolutely magnificent location with a huge disco ball in the middle of the rink. Whilst we were ice-skating, we noticed some very funny guys do some incredible tricks and pirouettes to create a YouTube video. Their little show was hilarious, but we were very jealous of their skills, however I enjoyed going around in circles with my friends.
I admit that we laughed very hard when we tried to look professional, even if we did fall too many times to count.
I also visited a few of the many Christmas markets in Paris. My favourite was the Christmas Market at La Défense, because we were able to walk through a variety of different stands, from jewellery and handmade local crafts, to wines and spirits. There was the best selection of food that I had ever seen in a market, from all over the world, but we chose a ham and Raclette sandwich which was both French and delicious. Furthermore, I bought a few Christmas presents, a necklace for my Mum and Christmas baubles for my grandparents, as little souvenirs of my year abroad.
Unfortunately, we still had work to do during the Christmas period, but we tried to soak up the festive atmosphere anyway. Evenings at Châtelet – Les Halles were full of festive spirit and we danced to Christmas music- we even discovered some French Christmas songs! Moreover, there were plenty of opportunities to look at the beautiful Christmas decorations, for example the Christmas trees in the Place du Panthéon in front of the Saint-Geneviève library were splendid and I loved to look at them after a long day of studying. I had to go to the Eiffel Tower as well to indulge in a glass of mulled wine with the best view of the city, and obviously, I made the most of the Boxing Day and New Year’s sales at Galeries Lafayette.
Therefore, despite the strikes, I made the most of Paris during the Christmas period, and I am really looking forward to my second semester here!
