Peñas, picos y paella
Ya ajustado a la nueva forma de vida académica aquí en Granada, he podido dedicar más tiempo a explorar las costumbres y maravillas culturales que tiene esta ciudad. Durante este mes el tiempo ha cambiado drásticamente, comenzando con la arena y el mar y terminando con la nevada en las montañas.
Paella
Afortunadamente, mis amigos y yo logramos ir a la playa por última vez antes de que el frío nos golpeara. La ubicación de Granada es sin parangón; montañas a 30 minutos al este y la playa a 30 minutos al sur. Frecuentemente vamos a una playa llamada Salobreña, normalmente bastante tranquila y poco conocida por los turistas, por lo que a menudo nos encontramos entre las familias españolas locales disfrutando de sus fines de semana. Para nuestro último viaje a la playa este año decidimos pedir una paella de mariscos en un chiringuito cercano. Fue quizás la paella más extravagante que he comido en mi vida, pero pese a ello, era muy buena.
Sin embargo, el tiempo ha cambiado ya. Hace unas semanas, la primera nieve se cayó sobre las montañas y ahora la temperatura media del día es de unos 10 grados. Los conciertos de la casa se han trasladado del jardín al salón, donde tenemos una chimenea para mantener el ambiente acogedor. Mis compañeros de casa me mostraron recientemente un gran lugar que ofrece un cálido refugio del frío de afuera y una experiencia española muy auténtica al mismo tiempo. El lugar es un restaurante-bar llamado La Casa de Vinos donde se sirven deliciosos y locales vinos tintos de Granada y más allá, y también sirven grandes surtidos de patés, embutidos, quesos, etc. Por lo general, está de bote en bote con gente charlando, comiendo, bebiendo, y, por supuesto, ¡evitando el frío!
Peña La Platería
Por fin, explorar la cultura de Granada no sería completo sin ir a ver un espectáculo de flamenco. Mis amigos y yo fuimos a Peña La Platería, un lugar de renombre que celebra espectáculos de flamenco todos los jueves por la noche. Afirma ser el club de flamenco más antiguo de España, fundado en 1949. Los intérpretes fueron excelentes y, por la reacción del público, estoy seguro de que todos sintieron el duende que la actuación merecía.
Como siempre, tengo mucha ilusión por los próximos meses y la llegada de una nueva estación.
Peñas, peaks and paella
Now adjusted to the new academic way of life here in Granada, I’ve been able to dedicate more time to exploring the cultural customs and wonders that this city has. Over this month the weather has changed dramatically, starting with sand and sea and ending with snowfall on the mountains.
Fortunately, my friends and I managed to go to the beach one last time before the cold hit. Granada’s location is like no other; mountains 30 minutes to the East and the beach 30 minutes to the South. We regularly go to a beach called Salobreña, usually quite quiet and not very well-known by tourists so we often find ourselves amongst the local Spanish families enjoying their weekends. For our final trip to the beach this year we decided to order a seafood paella in a near-by chiringuito (beach bar). It was perhaps the most extravagant paella I’ve ever had, but nonetheless, it was still very good.
La primera nieve sobre las montañas
However, the weather has now changed. A few weeks ago, the first snow fell on the mountains and now the average temperature in the day is around 10 degrees. The concerts at the house have been moved from the garden to the living room, where we have a fireplace to keep the atmosphere cosy. My housemates recently showed me a great spot which offers a warm refuge from the cold outside and a very authentic Spanish experience at the same time. The place is a restaurant-bar called La Casa de Vinos where they serve delicious and local red wines from Granada and beyond, and also serve large sharing platters of pâté, cured meats, cheese etc. It’s usually packed with lots of people chatting, eating, drinking, and, of course, avoiding the cold!
Peña La Platería
Finally, exploring the culture of Granada would not be complete without going to see a flamenco show. My friends and I went to Peña La Platería, a renowned spot which holds flamenco shows every Thursday evening. It claims to be Spain’s oldest flamenco club, founded in 1949. The performers were excellent and, from the audience’s reaction, I’m sure everyone felt the duende that the performance deserved.
