Caitlin Manchester: 남해와 영월: 한국의 지방 여행 기록 Namhae and Yeongwol: A Travelogue of Korea’s Provincial Regions

시간이 쏜살같다더니, 벌써 2학기가 되었습니다. 세 주 동안의 방학을 이미 마무리되었고 이제 한국어 수업을 다시 시작했습니다. 즐거움으로 가득한 한 달 동안 다양한 활동과 여행을 통해 제 삶의 시야가 넓혀진 것을 느꼈습니다.

영월과 남해로 여행을 갈 수 있는 기회를 얻게 되어 지금도 감사한 마음을 가지고 있습니다. 한국의 지역 관광지를 알리기 위한 정부 계획을 덕분에 다른 외국인들과 한국인 몇 분과 함께 진행하는 투어에 초대받았습니다.
방학 첫 주말에 저와 친구 두 명, 그리고 친절한 한국 사람 열다섯 명과 함께 영월로 떠났습니다.

창밖으로 천천히 바뀌는 풍경을 감상하며 세 시간의 KTX 여정 마치고 영월역에 도착하자마자 버스에 올라탔고, 구불구불한 산길을 따라 간 후에 한반도지형에서 구경했습니다. 15분 정도 숲길을 걸어 전망대에 도착하니, 한반도지형이 한눈에 내려다보였습니다. 그 모습이 한국 국토를 닮았다고 해서 붙여진 이름입니다. 눈 앞에 펼쳐진 경치를 보면 누구나 감탄할 것 같습니다. 저도 모르는 사이에 화려한 광경을 감상하며 자연 속에 빠져들다 보니 마음이 차분해졌습니다.

하지만 저에게 가장 잊지 못할 순간은 바로 저녁에 다들 함께 고기를 구워 나누고 밤늦게까지 다양한 한국 전통 게임을 했던 시간이었습니다. 우리는 모닥불 앞에서 불멍을 했고 우리 가이드님의 쥐불놀이 공연을 봤던 그 순간이 아직도 따뜻하게 기억에 남아 있습니다. 그 순간에는 우리 사이에는 어떤 친밀감과 따뜻함이 있었습니다. 이런 느낌은 도시 생활에서는 느끼기 힘든 분위기였습니다. 도시에서는 모든 것이 너무 빠르게 돌아가서 사람들은 다른 사람과 대화를 나누거나 작은 순간을 즐길 여유가 거의 없습니다.

얼마 지나지 않아 남해로 떠나는 여행에도 초대받게 되었습니다! 남해는 다른 지역보다 더 시골이라 지난 몇 년 동안 특히 젊은 사람들이 일하기 위해서 부산이나 서울을 비롯한 큰 도시로 이동하는 경우가 많아졌습니다. 줄어들고 있는 인구를 다시 늘리기 위해 주민들은 남해의 아름다움을 더 많은 사람들에게 알리고 싶고, 관광객뿐만 아니라 새로운 주민들도 늘어나길 바라고 있습니다.

그리고 그 경험은 정말 특별했습니다! 우리 숙소에 도착하기가 무섭게 바로 12km 달리기에 참여했는데, 외국인 참가자 중 1등, 여성 참가자 중 2등을 했습니다! 사실 저는 12km는커녕 5km도 뛸 수 없는 줄 알았었습니다. 보통 달리기를 하느니 차라리 아무 다른 운동이라도 하는 게 훨씬 낫습니다.
하지만 이 달리기는 구불구불한 산길을 따라 뛰면서 남해에서만 볼 수 있는 독특한 풍경을 감상할 수 있을 뿐더러 끝났을 때는 말로 표현할 수 없는 성취감과 만족감을 느꼈습니다. 인정하기 좀 싫지만 달리기가 생각보다 훨씬 보람 있는 일인 것 같습니다…

그 다음 이틀 동안 우리는 남해의 매력적인 그곳저곳을 둘러보며 많은 경험을 했습니다. 이순신 장군의 역사와 발자취에 대해 배우고, 해안길을 걸으며 남해의 자연을 즐겼습니다. 제가 영국 사람이라는 사실을 알고 우리 가이드님은 이순신 장군을 넬슨 제독과 비교하기도 했는데, 예상치 못했지만 꽤 재미있는 이야기이었습니다! 또 보리암과 독일 마을 같은 유명한 관광지들도 탐험하며 남해의 다양한 분위기를 즐길 수 있었습니다. 제가 잘 알고 있는 유럽의 독일과 다르지만 독일 마을에서 슈톨렌과 프레첼을 보니 괜히 크리스마스 기분이 들었습니다….

Time truly flies, I’m already in my second semester here! Three weeks of vacation have now wrapped up and I’m back attending Korean classes. I spent a month joyfully filled with various activities and travels, which I feel has really expanded my view on life.

I’m grateful to this day for the opportunities I had to travel to Yeongwol and Namhae. Through government initiatives meant to promote regional travel destinations in Korea, I was invited to participate in tours with other foreigners and Koreans. In the first weekend of my holidays, I set off to Yeongwol with two friends of mine and fifteen warm-hearted Korean people.

Watching the scenery slowly change outside the window during our three hour long KTX journey, as soon as we arrived at Yeongwol station we hopped on our bus and set off along winding mountain roads to the Korea Peninsula Terrain. After hiking for about fifteen minutes, we arrived at the viewpoint where the entire Korean Peninsula Terrain was visible at a glance. It’s called as such because the shape of it is the shape of the Korean Peninsula! I think that anyone who sees the view will be in awe. Without even realising it, having immersed myself nature and taking in the splendid scenery, I found myself in a sort of state of peace.

But the most unforgettable moment of the trip for me was the evening we all spent together, cooking together and sharing barbecue before playing various traditional Korean games late into the night. We huddled together around a bonfire watched our guide’s performance of jwibulnori (a traditional performance involving swinging burning coals) – a night I still remember fondly. There was a certain atmosphere of closeness and warmth between us all, which is hard to come by in city life where everything is fast, fast, fast, and people barely stop to talk to others or enjoy the small moments in life.

Not long after, I received another invitation to travel to Namhae! Compared to other places in Korea, Namhae is a more rural area so over the last few years more and more young people have been leaving to bigger cities such as Seoul or Busan for work. In an attempt to reverse this declining population, the residents of Namhae have been working to let more people know about the beauty of the region in an attempt to not only attract more tourists, but more new residents too.

And this experience was truly something else! As soon as we arrived at our residence, we immediately participated in a 12km run, where I (somehow) managed to take first place amongst foreigners and second in the women’s category. Being honest, I didn’t think I could even run five kilometres, let alone twelve! Usually I’d rather do absolutely any sport other than running. But in this ‘marathon’ I was not only able to take in the unique views of Namhae from the mountain trail, but also gained an indescribable feeling of satisfaction and achievement. I hate to admit it but maybe running truly is worth it…

The two days after that, we toured around the various charming locations of Namhae. We learned about the history of General Yi SunSin and his course, walking along the coastal path too. When our guide found out that I’m English, he even compared Yi SunSin to Admiral Nelson, a completely unexpected comparison but one that tickled me! We also looked around Boriam temple and the German Village, enjoying the atmosphere there. Although it was different from the Germany I’m familiar with in Europe (having visited a couple of times) I was over the moon to see stollen and pretzels (of which I bought a few), and from that moment on the Christmas excitement started sneaking up on me…
