메리 크리스마스, 그리고 새해 복 많이 받으세요!

크리스마스는 남녀노소를 막론하고 누구나 즐기는 세계적인 축제로 자리를 잡게 되었습니다. 최근 서울에는 크리스마스 마켓이 많이 생겨났고 수많은 사람들이 분위기 좋은 공간에 모여 연말의 정취를 즐기고 있습니다. 영국과 달리, 한국에서 크리스마스는 아주 중요한 명절이라기보다는 가족이나 친구들과 함께 즐거운 시간을 보내는 기회로 인식되는 것 같습니다. 그래서 우리 고양과 비교할 때, 한국의 크리스마스 분위기는 조금 더 상업적으로 느껴지기도 합니다.

요즘 한국의 날씨는 정말 많이 추워졌습니다! 최저 기온이 보통 영하 10도이며 최고 기온이 3도밖에 되지 않는 데다가 차가운 바람까지 부는 탓에 얼굴이 얼음처럼 느껴질 정도입니다.

새해를 맞아 저는 해돋이를 보기 위해 새벽 5시에 일어나 영하 10도의 추운 날씨 속에서 작은 산에 올랐습니다. 혼자였지만 주변 많은 한국 사람들이 있었고, 모두 함께 모여 있는 그 순간에 어떤 신기한 친밀감과 행복감을 느끼게 되었습니다. 첫 해는 신비로운 분위기를 자아냈고, 하늘이 붉고 노랗게 물들어 간 모습에 감사한 마음으로 새해를 맞이했습니다. 추운 날씨 속에서 산에 앉아서 한국에 있는 지난 네 달을 되돌아보면서, 제가 얼마나 성장했는지 그리고 갈 길이 아직 멀다는 사실을 실감했습니다.

크리스마스가 지나자마자, 화천을 방문할 기회가 생겼습니다. 강원도 북부에 위치한 화천은 북한과 가까운 지리적 특성 때문에 역사적으로 중요한 의미를 지닌 곳입니다.

화천에는 북한강에 위치한 평화의 댐이 있습니다. 이 웅장한 댐은 과거 북한의 수공 (물을 이용해 공격하는 전략) 가능성에 대응하기 위해 건설된 것이었습니다. 현재는 이 댐은 통일과 세계 평화의 희망을 상징하며 주변에 있는 공원 안에는 ‘세계 평화의 종’이 설치되어 있습니다. 이 종은 1만 관의 탄피를 모아 만들어 낸 종이고, 이 공원에 방문할 때 우리 직접 종을 울렸습니다. 특히한 것은 전체 1만관 탄피에서 1관을 일부러 떼어냈습니다. 그 이유는 바로 통일 날 때 남아 있는 그 1관의 탄피를 추가하고 세계 평화의 종을 완성하겠다는의미를 담고 있기 때문입니다. 이곳은 평화를 기원하는 공간으로, 말로 표현할 수 없는 분위기를 지니고 있었습니다.

또한 화천에서는 매년 겨울, 가로등과 조형물로 이루어진 불빛 축제가 열립니다. 반짝거리는 불빛이 길거리를 화사하게 밝혔고, 주변 사람들이 그 장면에 감탄이 절로 나왔습니다. 이 장면은 특히 제게 깊은 인상을 남겼고 한 폭의 그림 같은 모습이 아직도 제 머릿속에 상명합니다! 그리고 휴가를 나온 군인들이 여자그룹의 음악에 맞춰 신나게 춤을 추는 모습을 보는 것도 하나의 즐거움이었습니다!

이러한 경험들을 바탕으로 새해에는 더 많이 배우고, 더 넓은 시야로 세상을 바라보며, 지금보다 더 용기 있게 도전하고 십습니다. 올 한 해가 모두에게 따뜻한 순간과 좋은 기억으로 채워지기를 바랍니다!

Merry Christmas and happy new year!

Christmas has become a worldwide celebration that everyone can enjoy, whether young or old, male or female. Recently in Seoul many Christmas markets have popped up, and countless swathes of people gathered in this places to soak up the good atmosphere and celebrate the year coming to a close. Different to England, rather than being a very important festive day, here in Korea, it’s known as an opportunity to spend time with family and friends. This does mean that in some cases, the Christmas atmosphere here can feel more commercial than back home.

Recently, the weather here has become much colder. It ranges from around minus ten degrees to a maximum of three degrees, and on top of that there’s always a chill wind that makes your face feel like it’s frozen.

To celebrate the new year, I woke up at five am and headed out in this minus ten degree weather, hiking up a small mountain to see the first sunrise of the year. Although I headed out alone, I was accompanied by many Korean residents, and as we all gathered together there was a unique feeling of closeness and happiness.

The start of the new year carried with it a quiet yet mysterious atmosphere, and watching the sky turn all colours of red and yellow, we welcomed 2026 with hearts full of gratitude. Sitting in the mountains in the cold weather and looking back on the past four months in Korea, I realised how much I had grown and how long of a road I still have ahead of me.

As soon as Christmas passed, I had the opportunity to go to Hwachwon. Located in the north of Gangwon province, due to its unique location near North Korea, it’s a place filled with historical importance. In Hwacheon, there is a ‘Dam of Peace’ on the Bukhan river. This grandiose dam was built as a response to the possibility of water attacks by North Korea. Nowadays, it is a symbol of hope for reunification and world peace, a with the ‘Bell of World Peace’ being located the park next to it. This bell was made out of 10,000 bullet casings, and when we visited the park we were allowed to ring it ourselves! But what’s interesting is that one bullet casing out of 10,000 has been left out of the bell. The reason for this is that on the day of unification, the remaining shell will be added, and the Bell of World Peace will be completed. As a place where people pray for peace, it has an atmosphere that was difficult to express in words.

Also, every winter in Hwacheon, a light festival is held featuring streetlights and sculptures. The street was brightly illuminated up by sparkling lights, and the people around me couldn’t stop gasping at the sight. It definitely left a lasting impression on me (I’m going back this weekend to see it again) and the picturesque view is still vivid in my mind! Plus, it was rather funny to see the soldiers on leave dancing enthusiastically to the music of a girl group…

After all these experiences, my wishes for the new year are to learn even more, to see the world through a wider lens, and to take on challenges more bravely than ever. I hope the new year will be filled with warmth and good memories for everyone!
