Caitlin Manchester: 정월 대보름- March 2026

나는 아시아학에서 중국어를 전공했기 때문에 2월이 되면 보통 원소절이라는 명절이 먼저 떠오릅니다. 이 중국 축제는 보통 새해의 첫 보름달을 맞이하여 가족들이 모여 탕위안을 먹는 날입니다. 그래서 중국어를 배우기 시작한 후 나도 이렇게 원소절을 보내게 되었습니다. 하지만 한국에 온 후에 이 명절을 명절을 떠올렸을 때, 한국에도 똑같은 날에 명절을 축하하는 행사가 있다는 것을 깨닫게 되었습니다. 한국에서 정월 대보름이란 한 해의 첫 보름달이 뜨는 날입니다. 한국의 정월 대보름과 중국의 원소절은 모두 음력 1월 15일로 날짜는 같지만 음식부터 풍속이 다르다는 것을 알게 되었습니다. 그래서 정월 대보름과 나의 경험을 함께 소개하고자 합니다.

정월 대보름의 대표적인 음식을 말하자면 오곡밥, 묵은나물, 부럼 등을 들 수 있습니다. 특히 오곡밥이란 다섯 가지 곡식을 섞어 지은 음식으로 풍년과 건강을 상징하기 때문에 꼭 먹어야 하는 음식 중 하나입니다. 나는 정월 대보름 때 친구와 같이 축제에 갔는데, 그 경험이 생각보다 의미가 있고 특별한 추억이 되었습니다.

축제 장소에 도착하자 눈부신 LED가 반짝거리고, 무대에 서 있는 음악가들이 전통 노래를 부르고 있어서 우리는 금방 그 활발한 분위기에 빠졌습니다. 그날 축제의 분위기는 큰 음악 축제와 맞먹을 정도로 활기찼습니다! 추운 날씨였지만 많은 사람들이 따뜻한 마음으로 우리를 환영해 주었습니다.
그리고 기억에 남는 순간 중 하나는 MC님이 가장 멀리에서 온 사람을 찾고 있을 때, 나와 내 친구가 같이 무대에 올라가라고 했고 함께 게임을 했던 순간이었습니다.

무엇보다도 흥미로웠던 것은 달집태우기였습니다. 달집태우기의 상징적인 의미는 한 해 동안의 액운을 태워 보내고 새로운 행운과 풍년을 기원하는 데 있습니다. 밤이 되자 사람들이 큰 나무더미 주변에 하나둘씩 모여들었습니다. 잠시 후 이 지역에서 중요한 역할을 맡은 몇몇 사람들이 제단 앞에서 고개를 숙이며 소원을 빌었습니다. 그 의식이 끝난 뒤, 약 세 사람 키 높이의 달집에 불을 붙였습니다.

처음에는 연기가 크게 피어올랐지만, 곧 거대한 불꽃이 타오르기 시작했습니다. 불꽃이 튀며 밤하늘로 올라가는 모습이 정말 장관이었고, 흐린 날씨에도 불구하고 그 장면은 눈을 뗄 수 없을 만큼 인상적이었습니다! 우리는 20미터 정도 떨어져 있었는데도 뜨거운 열기가 느껴져서 더욱 신기하게 느껴졌습니다. 그 순간에는 마치 마법 같은 분위기가 느껴지기도 했습니다.

기회가 있다면 이 축제에 꼭 참여해 보기를 추천하고 싶습니다. 그 축제에서 나와 내 친구는 유일한 외국인이었는데, 지금까지 경험해 보지 못한 삶의 모습을 엿볼 수 있었다고 생각합니다. 이런 경험이 바로 새로운 언어를 배우고 새로운 나라에서 살아가는 의미라고 봅니다.

As someone who majored in East Asian studies – Chinese specifically – every time February rolls around, I think of Yuanxiao festival. At this Chinese festival, families gather and eat tangyuan to welcome in the new years first full moon. So ever since I started learning Chinese, I joined in and celebrated this festival too. However after I came to Korea and this celebration came around, I became aware of Korea also having a celebration on this day. Known as Jeongwol Daeboreum, or the ‘Great Full Moon Festival’, it is also a day to celebrate the first full moon of the new year. Although both Korea and China’s celebrations fall on the same day, the 15th day of the first lunar month, I learned that the customs and food are different. As such I wanted to introduce Korea’s celebrations and my experience of it.

For the representative foods of Jeongwol Daeboreum, examples include five grain rice, seasoned dried vegetable dishes, and assorted nuts. In particular, ogokbap, a dish made by cooking five different grains together, symbolises a good harvest and good health thus is considered a food that must be eaten on this day.
This year I went with a friend to a Jeongwol Daeboreum celebration, and the experience turned out to be more meaningful than I expected, becoming a very special memory. As soon as we reached the venue, we were immediately immersed in a vibrant atmosphere, with dazzling LED lights and musicians on stage singing traditional songs. The atmosphere was incredible, rivaling that of a major music festival! Despite the chilly weather, many people welcomed us with open arms.
One memorable moment was when the MC called out for the person who had traveled the furthest, calling my friend and I to go up on stage together where we played a game for prizes.

Most impressive and enjoyable out of everything however, was the bonfire. In this celebration, the bonfire has a symbolic meaning of burning away all of the bad luck from the year and wishing for both new good luck as well a bountiful year.
As soon as it turned night, people gathered around the huge pile of wood. Not long after, several important people from the local area bowed in front of an alter and gave their wishes. After this rite had finished, they set fire to the three-people tall bonfire.

At first huge clouds of smoke billowed out, but soon after, it grew into a massive fire. The sight of the flames rising into the night sky was truly spectacular, and even with the weather being cloudy, the scene was so impressive that I couldn’t take my eyes off it! Even from twenty metres away we could still feel the heat of it, making the whole experience more unbelievable. In that moment, it truly felt like magic.

I highly recommend joining in with this celebration if you have the chance. As the only foreigners there, it felt like a special view into a life I’ve never experienced before – which, to me, is the whole point of learning a new language and living in a new country.
