A building on the Eastern side of Madrid
Febrero ha sido muy agradable hasta ahora, ya que he llegado a conocer a mis nuevos compañeros de piso cada vez mejor a medida que los días se alargan. He estado pasando más tiempo al aire libre a medida que el clima mejora, y he estado haciendo un esfuerzo para sumergirme en varias experiencias culturales.
A principios de mes, visité el centro de artes contemporáneas El Matadero, en el sur de Madrid, a orillas del río Manzanares. La razón por la que quería visitar el establecimiento fue para conocer más sobre la arquitectura islámica y su prominencia en España. Mientras estudiaba español aprendí sobre los siglos durante los cuales España existió bajo el dominio de los reyes árabes, y vivir en el país hace que sea más fácil ver la influencia que existe hasta el día de hoy en la cultura española cotidiana.
Esto me lleva a una parte icónica de la cultura española: El flamenco. Fui a ver un espectáculo de flamenco en vivo este mes, y fue una experiencia que sin duda no olvidaré pronto. Desafortunadamente, no se me permitió tomar ninguna foto,

pero como sucede, no pude quitar los ojos de los músicos y bailarines de todos modos. Los cantantes utilizan una técnica vocal que tiene sus raíces en un llamado árabe a la oración, con una especie de efecto vibrato en tonos cambiantes y notas bellamente fuertes. El baile era elegante y poderoso, y era una demostración convincente de emoción y una gran demostración de narración. Aunque no era barato, valía la pena cada céntimo y no podría recomendar más a ningún otro erudito de John Speak en España, o a cualquiera que se encuentre en España.
La intensidad de mi lugar de trabajo ha aumentado enormemente, y me ha llevado a garantizar que mis habilidades lingüísticas continúen mejorando con esta inmersión total. En mi equipo de oficina de Actos, Publicaciones y Exposiciones, mi colega recientemente se fue para centrarse en su maestría; esto ha dado lugar a que sus responsabilidades se le hayan dado a mí y a otro colega y ha implicado desarrollar un papel muy orientado al cliente. Realmente he disfrutado esto, porque permite la práctica de mi español en un ambiente de alta presión, lo que inevitablemente se convierte en un catalizador para el desarrollo de mis habilidades. Estar estresado en el trabajo es un privilegio, porque significa que se me ha confiado lo suficiente como para tener responsabilidades serias en las que los colegas y los clientes confían. En última instancia, estoy en España para sumergirme en la cultura y mejorar mis habilidades lingüísticas, y la intensidad del papel solo puede ayudar a eso.
Mi objetivo para el próximo mes es visitar al menos dos ciudades fuera de Madrid, y continuar lanzándome al estilo de vida español de todas las formas que pueda.

Impressive contemporary architecture
February has been very enjoyable so far, as I have gotten to know my new flatmates better and better as the days get longer. I have been spending more time outdoors as the weather gets better, and I have been making an effort to immerse myself in various cultural experiences.
At the beginning of the month, I visited the contemporary arts centre El Matadero in the south of Madrid along the bank of the river Manzanares. The reason I wanted to visit the establishment was to find out more about Islamic architecture and its prominence in Spain. Whilst studying Spanish I learned about the centuries during which Spain existed under the rule of Moorish kings, and living in the country makes it easier to see the influence that exists to this day in the everyday Spanish culture.
This leads me to an iconic part of Spanish culture: Flamenco. I went to see a live flamenco show this month, and it was an experience that I will certainly not forget any time soon. Unfortunately, I was not allowed to take any photos, but as it happens, I was unable to take my eyes off of the musicians and dancers anyway. The singers use a vocal technique that has its roots in an Arabic call to prayer, with a sort of vibrato effect in changing tones and beautifully strong notes. The dancing was elegant and powerful, and was a convincing display of emotion and a great demonstration of storytelling. Though it was not cheap, it was worth every cent and I could not recommend more to any other John Speak scholars in Spain, or anyone who may find themselves in Spain for that matter.

The intensity of my workplace has ramped up greatly, and it has led me to ensure my language skills continue to get better with this full immersion. In my office team of Actos, Publicaciones, and Exposiciones, my colleague recently left to focus on his masters degree; This has resulted in his responsibilities being given to myself and another colleague and it has involved developing into a very client facing role. I have really enjoyed this, because it allows the practice of my Spanish in somewhat of a high-pressure environment, which inevitably becomes a catalyst for developing my skills. Being stressed at work is a privilege, because it means that I have been trusted enough to be given serious responsibilities that colleagues and customers rely on. Ultimately, I am in Spain to immerse myself in the culture and improve my language skills, and the intensity of the role can only help that.
My goal for the next month is to visit at least two towns outside of Madrid, and to continue throwing myself into the Spanish lifestyle in any and every way I can.
