참교육 – 드라마이자 사회적 담론 Teach You a Lesson – a drama and a social discourse – Caitlin Manchester, July 2026

한 달이 더 지나 어느덧 장마철이 찾아왔습니다. 맑던 하늘은 어느새 먹구름으로 가득 차고, 수업에 서둘러 가는 사람들은 갑작스러운 폭우에 흠뻑 젖곤 합니다. 저 역시 우산을 꽉 쥔 채 고개를 숙이고 캠퍼스를 걸을 때가 많습니다.

장마철은 다른 계절보다 훨씬 습하지만, 동시에 특유의 분위기를 지니고 있습니다. 서울에서 생활하다 보면 비가 억수같이 쏟아져도 외출을 하지 않을 수는 없습니다! 제 생각에는 서울에는 할 것도 많고 볼거리도 다양해서 항상 어디론가 나가고 싶은 마음이 듭니다. 하지만 이럴 때는 집에서 조용히 독서를 하거나 공부를 하는 것이 가장 잘 어울립니다.

저에게는 이런 날씨에는 집에서 드라마를 보는 것이 딱 맞습니다. 저는 요즘 참교육이라는 웹툰 원작을 바탕으로 제작된 드라마를 보고 있습니다. 이는 단순한 멜로나 로맨스 아니고, 한국의 교권 붕괴와 학교 폭력 등 사회적 문제를 전개하는 드라마입니다. 이 드라마가 다루는 문제를 말하고자 하면 악성 민원, 교권 추락, 학교 폭력, 촉법소년 등 문제를 들 수 있습니다.

이 드라마는 한국 사회가 안고 있는 여러 문제를 현실감 있게 다루며 큰 사회적 관심을 불러일으켰고, 많은 시청자의 공감을 얻었습니다.
저는 ‘참교육’ 이 높은 인기를 얻은 가장 큰 이유는 바로 시청자에게 카타르시스를 제공하기 때문이라고 생각합니다. 현실에서는 이러한 깊이 뿌리내린 문제를 해결하기가 쉽지 않지만, 이 드라마는 현실에서는 불법이거나 실현하기 어려운 방식으로 문제를 해결합니다. 이러한 전개는 시청자들에게 현실에서 이루기 어려운 바람을 간접적으로 실현해 주며, 통쾌함과 카타르시스를 제공합니다.

물론 ‘속이 시원하다’는 긍정적인 반응도 있었지만, 지나치게 자극적이라는 비판도 받았습니다. 문제 학생이나 진상 학부모가 신체적 처벌을 받거나 공개적으로 망신을 당하는 장면은 시청자들에게 통쾌함을 줄 수 있습니다. 그러나 이러한 연출이 폭력과 체벌을 미화하거나 정당화하는 것처럼 보인다는 비판도 제기되었습니다.

홍종찬 감독님은 ‘참교육’이 사회적 논의를 시작하는 계기가 된다면 작품의 역할은 충분히 했다고 생각한다”고 말했습니다.

저는 이 드라마의 흥행이 교육과 권리 문제에 대한 사회적 관심과 논의가 점점 더 커지고 있다는 것을 보여 준다고 생각합니다. 또한 이 드라마는 여러 나라에서 시청 순위 1위를 기록하며 큰 인기를 얻은 것이, 이러한 문제들이 한국만의 문제가 아니라, 전 세계적으로 공감할 수 있는 주제임을 보여 줍니다.

아직 《참교육》을 보지 않으셨다면 꼭 한 번 보시기를 추천드립니다. 교육이나 권리 문제에 관심이 없더라도, 뛰어난 연기와 빠른 전개 덕분에 충분히 재미있게 즐길 수 있다고 생각합니다.

As another month passes, the rainy season has arrived. Once clear skies are now filled with clouds, and people hurrying to class often get drenched in sudden rains. I also have had many an occasion while walking around campus, clutching an umbrella with my head ducked.

Although the rainy season is much more humid than other times of the year, it carries a unique sort of atmosphere at the same time. Living in Seoul, I find that even if its raining like the heaven have opened up, you still can’t avoid leaving the house! In my experience there are so many things to do see in Seoul, that there’s always somewhere you want to go. But in this case with the rainy season, it’s fitting to read or study quietly at home.

For me, I think this weather is perfect for watching dramas. Recently I’ve been watching a drama called ‘Teach You a Lesson’, a drama adapted from a webtoon of the same name. It’s not your usual romance or melodrama, but instead unfolds social problems such as school violence and the collapse of teacher authority in Korea. The types of issues it explores include complaints with malicious intentions, the collapse of school authority, school violence and juvenile offenders, etc.

The drama realistically depicts a range of issues Korean society is currently facing, thus generating widespread public discussion and resonating with many viewers. I believe that the main reason ‘Teach You a Lesson’ has become so popular is that it offers viewers a sense of catharsis; while these deeply rooted problems are difficult to solve in real life, the drama resolves them through methods that would otherwise be illegal or difficult to enact in reality. By doing so, it vicariously fulfils desires that are viewed as unrealistic in everyday life, leaving viewers with a sense of satisfaction and catharsis.

Of course, while there are positive reactions calling it ‘refreshing’, the drama also received criticisms that it was too inflammatory. Scenes in which problem students or malicious parents are physically punished or publicly humiliated can give viewers a sense of refreshment; however through such scenes, ‘Teach You a Lesson’ has also been critiqued for appearing to beautify or justify violence and corporal punishment.

Director Hong Jongchan said, “If ‘Teach You a Lesson’ serves as a catalyst to start social discussion, I think that the work has fulfilled its role sufficiently”.

I think that the very popularity of the show in itself is enough to prove that the topic of education and rights is growing more debated on by the day. Furthermore the international appeal, having reached number one in dozens of countries, proved this issue to be a worldwide one, not something limited to Korea.

If you’ve not yet watched this drama, I highly recommend it. Whether you’re interested in the topics discussed or not, it makes for an excellent watch with outstanding acting and a fast paced plot.
