Bienvenida a México gringa ! Ève Cooke, Septiembre 2026
After arriving in Mexico City two weeks ago, I can happily report that the choice of Mexico as the first destination in my year abroad has been a good one; at the same time, especially as a solo female traveller, it has also been an eye-opening experience.
I have been deeply touched by the welcome generally given to me by the Mexicans, which has also led me to wonder if and/or how wealthier nations could learn from this example.
I am lucky to be staying with a lovely host family who straight away opened their home to me. Their two daughters, Sofi and Fer, are both students and approximately the same age as me. They have generally been very helpful and first showed me how to navigate the public transport system (which includes “Women Only” carriages !).
My biggest challenge to date has been the linguistic challenge of adapting to the “Mexican” form of Spanish, which does differ to the classical Spanish that I have been exposed to up until now. However, living with a host family, working in a Spanish-speaking environment and doing regular CrossFit classes are helping me to acclimatise!
I was lucky to have been here for Mexico’s Independence Day celebrations on the 16th of September and experience the joyous and patriotic celebrations. Being in the capital city, I witnessed the “Del Grito” ceremony with my new friends – mezcal and pozole in hand!
Mexican food has become an important part of my daily routine, from tacos to quesadillas and tostadas to chiles en nogada…and I have not tried everything yet.
This weekend I will be visiting San Miguel de Allende, a former colonial city and now a UNESCO World Heritage site, in Guanajuato State. It is famous for its historical (and brightly coloured) architecture.
Furthermore, my internship in the British Chamber of Commerce has been very useful in terms of learning technical business lingo. On the 22nd of September, I was able to assist at an AI event during the HSBC tour. It was very interesting to gain insight into Mexico’s position with AI and its plans for the future.
During the next few months, I intend to embrace as many aspects of Mexican culture as possible – from cooking classes to dancing the salsa, exploring specific parts of the country and learning about its history and culture!
