Bienvenue à Paris – Eleanor Hill, September 2026
Bonjour Paris!
English version below :
Hello Paris ! After having moved to Paris last Thursday, I have had to adjust to living in a big city, which feels immense compared to the island of Jersey where I live. Unfortunately, at the start I had a few difficulties living in my student accommodation where there was a lot of rubbish everywhere, and even a rat – the true Parisian experience! Therefore, it was difficult for me to feel comfortable, without my parents and friends in a city completely unknown to me, with a rat in my flat! Although my living conditions are not incredible, I was able to meet new friends in my orientation week at Sciences Po et we did a lot of activities around Paris, like eating a picnic next to the Eiffel Tower, tasting cheese and wine at my university campus, and my favourite activity, a boat tour along the Seine.
On the other hand, it goes without saying that whilst doing lots of touristic activities is really interesting, I am excited to become better settled in Paris and to start my courses at Sciences Po. I will take six different courses to obtain the exchange certificate, including a French class which will be really useful. My courses are, for the most part, in the disciplines of law and politics where I will be taught by experts in the field of international relations. So, I hope that not only my French level will improve during my exchange year, but when I return to Bath in September, my intelligence will have also increased.
Finally, even if my first few days in Paris weren’t exactly easy, with lots of phone calls made to my mum, I am still happy to be in such a vibrant and young city for what I consider a year of transformation. Before leaving Jersey, I was scared of the unknown and of being without my family and friends in a big city, but I have always understood the importance of doing the scary things in life, thanks to my parents who always encouraged me to go on exchange.
