Abril en Valencia, España
Este abril ha vuelto el calor a Valencia, y con él, más ganas de explorar España. No cabe duda de que la vida valenciana gira en torno a su clima fantástica; la gente gravita a los espacios comunitarios afuera, tal como los Jardines Del Real. También conocido localmente por el nombre “Viveros”, esto es mi parque favorito, que se puede encontrar justo detrás de mi piso. Cuando hace sol, el parque se siente como un jardín mágico. De hecho, es inhabitada por periquitos verdes, pavos reales y una colonia de gatos, lo que contribuye a la sensación que se encuentre en un sitio muy exótico, y un poco surreal, cuando andas por el laberinto de palmeras y rosas.
Al final de marzo, me alegró que tuviera la oportunidad de visitar Alicante, junto con dos de mis amigas del Reino Unido. La excursión duró dos días, y me sorprendió que el tren de Valencia fuera tan barato (a diferencia de los del Reino Unido). Lo que más me encantó fue ir al pueblo Santa Cruz, el casco antiguo, en que encontramos casas humiles con azulejos hermosos. Allí vimos la famosa casita de las macetas azules, que era más bonita de lo que había imaginado. Además, aproveché la oportunidad para enseñar frases de castellano a mis amigas; con éxito, acabaron pidiendo en cafeterías y restaurantes en español.
En la vida académica, he estado desarrollando mi conocimiento de la economía social. En clase, tuve que exponer una presentación sobre las estadísticas, en el contexto de la economía social en España. La investigación detrás de mi obra fue desafiante realizar, ya que se requirió leer muchos documentos oficiales en español. También, fue un reto en sí mismo intentar pronunciar todos los números largos, y me daba vergüenza tropezarme con las palabras frente a la clase. No obstante, creo que estas experiencias son cruciales para tanto mi aprendizaje, como el desarrollo de mi confianza.
Para concluir, el mes pasado ha traído las primeras señales de la primavera, junto con recuerdos especiales de explorar fuera de Valencia. Sigo disfrutando de me vida cotidiana aquí, y mejorando mi español y entendimiento de los matices de esta cultura tan pacifica y equilibrada.
The heat has returned to Valencia this April, and with it the urge to explore more of Spain. There’s no doubt that Valencian life revolves around its fantastic weather; the people gravitate to outside, community spaces, such as the Jardines Del Real (the Royal Gardens). Also known locally as Viveros, this is my favourite park, which can be found just behind my flat. When it’s sunny, the park feels like an enchanted garden. In fact, it’s home to green parakeets, peacocks and a colony of cats, which only contributes to the feeling that you’re somewhere very exotic, and a tad surreal, as you wonder through the maze of palm trees and roses.
At the end of march, I was delighted to have the opportunity to visit Alicante, along with two of my friends from the UK. The trip lasted 2 days, and I was surprised that the train from Valencia was so cheap (in contrast to the trains in the UK). The thing I loved most was going to Santa Cruz, the old town, where we found humble homes with beautiful tiling. There we saw the famous “little house with blue plant pots”, which was more pretty than I’d imagined. Furthermore, I took the opportunity to teach some Spanish phrases to my friends; they ended up successfully being able to order in cafes and restaurants in Spanish.
In my academic life, I’ve been developing my understanding of the social economy. In class, I had to do a presentation on statistics in the context of the social economy in Spain. The research behind my work was challenging to conduct, as it required reading lots of official documents in Spanish. It was also a challenge in itself to attempt to pronounce all the long numbers, and it was embarrassing tripping up on my words in front of the class. Nevertheless, I believe these experiences are crucial for both my learning and developing my confidence.
To conclude, the past month has brought the first signs of Spring, along with special memories of exploring outside of Valencia. I’m continuing to enjoy daily life here, and improving my Spanish and my understanding of the nuances to this peaceful and balanced culture.
