Phoebe Coleman: Abril en Colombia, April 2026
Mid-March to mid-April in Bogotá started with a big milestone for me: finishing my internship with BritCham Colombia after 8 months! It felt like such a proud moment, especially celebrating it in the most Colombian way possible—with food. My boss invited the whole team over to his apartment and cooked us a traditional bandeja paisa, which was incredible (and enormous, of course). It felt so special to share that together, and just when I thought the celebrations were over, I walked into a surprise party at my house later that night. It made me feel so lucky to have found such lovely people here. Not long after, I have now stepped into a new chapter—starting as an executive at a start-up UK-Colombian cyberintelligence company. I’m honestly so excited!
Without a doubt, the highlight of my last month was my trip to Santa Marta with Jorge. It was everything I needed and more. The constant heat on the coast is no joke, but beach heat is the best kind. We stayed in a villa suite right on the sand, waking up to the sound of the sea every morning. We drank out of coconuts, ate what felt like endless amounts of shrimp, and I completely fell in love with the costeño accent. It was slow, sunny, and just perfect.
Back in Bogotá, life keeps its rhythm. I had my first dance presentation representing Son de Habana, my salsa academy, performing in a casino rueda. We danced for about an hour, pulling the audience in and turning it into a kind of interactive class. It was so much fun and such a confidence boost. That said… partner choreography for my June competitions has now begun, and wow—it is SO difficult. There’s a lot of laughing, a lot of confusion, and a lot of “disaster, again, from the top.” My solo is coming along though, and the choreography is officially finished, so now it’s all about cleaning it (and somehow doing it in heels… verga).
There were also those smaller, cozy moments that made the month feel complete. A wine and arepas night with my best friend Sofi, Jeremías, and Jorge—simple and perfect. Catching up with my British friend at a shots-and-cake café (which honestly says everything about my life here). And of course, plenty of evenings out at Salsa Camará dancing the night away! The dynamic there means you dance with so many people, so it’s a never-ending salsa social… my literal dream.
We also celebrated Easter—Día de Pascua—with Jorge’s family, which was really wholesome. We hid eggs all around the house for his baby cousins, and then went to see the Mario movie together afterwards. It felt really special to be included in something so family-centered.
All in all, the last month has been a mix of big milestones and little joys. Bogotá continues to surprise me, challenge me, and make me feel at home all at once. I can’t wait to see what May brings. John Speak, te agradezco más que nunca.
De mediados de marzo a mediados de abril en Bogotá empezó con un gran logro para mí: ¡terminé mi pasantía en BritCham Colombia después de 8 meses! Se sintió como un momento muy especial, sobre todo celebrándolo de la forma más colombiana posible: con comida. Mi jefe invitó a todo el equipo a su apartamento y nos preparó una bandeja paisa tradicional, que estuvo increíble (y gigante, como debe ser). Fue muy bonito compartir ese momento juntos y, justo cuando pensé que las celebraciones habían terminado, llegué a mi casa y me encontré con una fiesta sorpresa. Me hizo sentir muy afortunada de haber encontrado gente tan linda aquí.
Poco después, empecé un nuevo capítulo: ahora soy ejecutiva en una startup colombo-británica de ciberinteligencia. La verdad, ¡estoy demasiado emocionada!
Sin duda, lo mejor de este último mes fue mi viaje a Santa Marta con Jorge. Fue todo lo que necesitaba y más. El calor de la costa es fuerte, pero el calor de playa es lo mejor. Nos quedamos en una villa justo frente al mar, despertándonos cada mañana con el sonido de las olas. Tomamos agua de coco, comimos lo que parecían cantidades infinitas de camarones, y me enamoré completamente del acento costeño. Fue un viaje tranquilo y simplemente perfecto.
De vuelta en Bogotá, la vida siguió su ritmo. Tuve mi primera presentación de baile representando a Son de Habana, mi academia de salsa, en una rueda de casino. Bailamos más o menos una hora, metiendo al público y volviéndolo parte de la dinámica, como una clase interactiva. Fue demasiado divertido y me dio mucha confianza.Ya hemos empezado con la coreografía de pareja para mis competencias en junio y wow—es MUY difícil. Hay muchas risas, mucha confusión y muchos “desastre, otra vez, desde arriba”. Mi solo va avanzando bien, y la coreografía ya está completamente lista, así que ahora toca limpiarla (y lograr bailarla en tacones… verga).
También hubo esos momentos más pequeños y acogedores que hicieron el mes aún más especial. Una noche de vino y arepas con mi mejor amiga Sofi, Jeremías y Jorge—simple y perfecta. Ponerme al día con mi amiga británica en un café de shots y torta (que honestamente resume bien mi vida aquí). Y, por supuesto, varias noches en Salsa Camará bailando por toda la noche. La dinámica allá hace que bailes con muchísima gente, así que es como una social de salsa infinito… mi sueño literal.
También Jorge y yo celebramos el Día de Pascua con su familia, lo cual fue muy especial. Escondimos huevos de chocolate por toda la casa para sus primitos y luego fuimos a ver la película de Mario Kart juntos. Se sintió muy bonito ser parte de algo tan familiar.
En resumen, este último mes ha sido una mezcla de grandes logros y pequeños momentos felices. Bogotá sigue sorprendiéndome, retándome y haciéndome sentir en casa al mismo tiempo. No puedo esperar a ver qué trae mayo. John Speak, te agradezco más que nunca.
