With my flight, my whole life packed in a suitcase, my year in Madrid began with a touristic aspect: a stop in the famous Mercadona near my flat; eating lemon ice cream while walking near the Royal Palace of Madrid, and trying tapas and calamari sandwiches in the San Miguel Market. The beginning was different and like the summer holidays. Instead of the London rain and the annual preparation for the autumn, the September sun is hot, extending the summer into September.
While the week continued, the tourist sense faded. Under the strong sun, I met with my friends in the Rastro market of Madrid, wherein I bought a small ring, and we ate ham and tomato sandwiches. With social activities, my friend group grew with new friends from various different countries, some Spanish and others not, but all friendly. Together, a day before the start of our classes, we sat in the main square, drinking (I have an obsession with Fanta lemon) and chatting while the night that was so full of life and sound surrounded us.
The integration continued with the start of classes. It was a little difficult adapting to the classes, but the variety of classes immediately interested me. Psychology of communication on Monday, journalism Wednesday, law Thursday, and more. Also, the switch when I speak with teachers and friends is deepening my hold over the language and its changing depending on the context.
The first weeks of the year abroad display only a small part of what will be a year full of adventure and lessons. The mix of cultural experiences and nightlife has slowed my lifestyle, and I hope that these new experiences continue with the development of my language abilities.
