October in Madrid
In the beginning of October, my first rain in Madrid arrived, with it the sun disappeared into the clouds and, on a random day, I was completely soaked. The weather is changing, and, for me, Madrid also.
My adventures in Madrid can be summarised in 3 parts: food, cultural, people.
Through food, I have explored the gastronomy of Madrid and the way different cultures have mixed together in the city. Including rich Asian food such as Vietnamese and Chinese food, my friends and I have tried the tapas at Cien Montaditos, bread with tomato, and the digitally famous salads of Honest Greens. Even though the food has been delicious, it has given me a new perspective on the mixture of cultures in the city, similar to London, wherein there is a melting pot of different cultures.
Also, my favourite cultural experience up till now has been my visit to the Prado gallery. I visited the Prado and saw an amazing collection of classical paintings and a wide variety of different artists, specifically my favourite work “Saturn Devouring his Son”, one of Goya’s Pinturas Negras. After studying Goya’s works in my Spanish Contemporary Art class, it was interesting seeing it up close, but also seeing the way in which the gallery presents the context of the art work. I hope to go to the Reina Sofia gallery to see the surrealist works of Maruja Mallo that I have studied at my university in London, but also to see “Guernica” – another painting that was part of my A Level studies.
Another thing that has changed the way I see Madrid have been the protests. I have seen different protests, such as the camping in Sol, protests for Palestine, and other education-based ones. Instead of seeing these historic moments on my phone, I am living in real time, in Madrid, the strength of the protesters that fight for their rights and the rights of others, and it impresses me. In general, seeing the different protests in Europe is very interesting, but the way in which Madrid as a city has changed from a touristic city that me and my parents explored to land for political change.
Finally, what has kept me going in Madrid are the people both who I knew from before as well as those who have visited. My brother visited me the weekend of my birthday, and we spend every day searching for touristic points, such as Bernabeu, and we tried many of my favourite restaurants, such as La Desayunaria. In the blink of an eye, his visit ended. With various friends, I spent my birthday watching the fireworks in front of the Palacio de Cibeles, dancing in the street.
Still there is a lot for me to discover, but I know that Madrid is not only a place to study, but a city that has changed me forever. Just like the weather in Madrid, I have also changed.
