Hiroshima trip: Yasemin Kaban – July 2026

Hello, everyone!

Last week I went to Hiroshima for the first time. I went with friends who lived in Hiroshima before but I ended up exploring Hiroshima by myself since they wanted to meet with other people. Even though I explored by myself, I didn’t feel lonely at all. I liked doing things like eating and walking alone. I especially liked learning about Hiroshima’s history. Of course I’ve heard of other famous things about Hiroshima but the most well known thing is probably the atomic bombing of Hiroshima. In this report, I want to talk about both Hiroshima’s sad history and today’s Hiroshima.

I went to Hiroshima Peace park and museum and learned a lot about the Atomic bomb that hit in August, 1945. In the park, there were a lot of monuments dedicated to the victims of the atomic bombing. Since the Peace memorial park is right next to the Atomic bomb’s epicenter, when you walk the park you get a sense of grief. According to my friend, the exhibitions in the museum were quite difficult to experience. The exhibitions showed stories from the victims of the atomic bombing, both those who lost their life and survivors. There were art pieces of the atomic bombing and sad reports from survivors and it made me feel deeply sad. However, I learned that people born after the atomic bombing also suffered the effects of radiation. Yet, despite all the suffering Hiroshima endured, there is now a sense of peace. That is why I believe it is important to preserve the city’s history and raise awareness about the dangers of nuclear weapons.

Of course after visiting the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum, I had planned to visit some famous sites in Hiroshima, but heavy rain prevented me from going to all the places I wanted to see. For example, I wanted to go to Miyajima to see Itsukushima Shrine and hike up Mount Misen. But since taking the ferry to Miyajima in heavy rain is dangerous, I decided to do something else instead. I tried visiting Hiroshima Castle, but I wasn’t able to go inside. So, to stay dry, I decided to visit an art museum and do some shopping in the Hondori shopping district.

My friends recommended Hiroshima-style okonomiyaki. Of course, I had already tried Osaka-style okonomiyaki, but I was really looking forward to trying the Hiroshima version. It was delicious. In fact, I think I prefer the Hiroshima style over the Osaka style. Since Hiroshima-style okonomiyaki includes yakisoba or yaki-udon noodles, it has a crispier, smokier flavor compared to the Osaka version.

Although I didn’t get to do everything I wanted, I think it was a wonderful trip.

Well, see you later!
