さようなら日本!/Goodbye Japan!: Yasemin Kaban – August 2026

みんな、こんにちは！

さて、これで終わりです。日本での６か月の留学生活が、今週で終わります。７月末に試験が終わった後で、イギリスに帰る前に、できるだけたくさん旅行をして、いろいろなことを体験しておきたかったのです。でもその前に、日本での留学体験について話したいと思います。この半年間は夢のような日々でした。日本に来る前は、アジアに来るのは初めてだったし、文化や言語の違いにも慣れていなかったので、不安でした。でも、新しい人と出会ったり、違う食べ物を食べたりした後で、日本での生活を楽しむことができるようになりました。ここで生活を築くことができました。もちろん、ここで大変なこともいくつありましたが、時間がたつにつれて、日本での生活に慣れていきました。例えば、歩道で自転車に乗る人にも、地下鉄でじろじろ見られることにも、どこを探してもゴミ箱が見つからないことにも、すっかり慣れてしまいました。

試験が終わった後で、沖縄に行きました。沖縄は文化が違っていて面白いので、ずっと行ってみたかったのです。また、ビーチに行って泳いだり、いい天気を楽しんだりできるのも楽しみでした。実は、沖縄は車がないと観光するのは難しいです。那覇市には見どころがたくさんあって、空港にも近いので、那覇市に滞在することにしましたが、ビーチは1か所しかありません。それでも、古い神社や熱帯植物園、そして世界第2位の水族館を訪れました。沖縄そばや塩アイスクリームといった新しい食べ物も味わいました。髪に飾る花など、たくさんの土産も買いました。全体として、沖縄への旅行は最高でした。

沖縄から戻った直後に、イギリスから来た友達と会うために東京へ行きました。ところが、到着した日に財布を忘れてしまって、在留カードも持っていなかったので、ホテルにチェックインできないのではないかと心配しました。でも、実際には何の問題もなくて、無事に泊まることができました。友達はディズニーやチームラボに行ったり、渋谷などの観光スポットを巡ったりしたかったので、毎日が長くて疲れ果てました。

その後、友人は帰国し、私は東京でもう少し時間を過ごしました。浅草や原宿を訪れ、鎌倉では丸一日を過ごしました。鎌倉は、有名なビーチや江ノ電があることから、私がずっと訪れてみたかった日本唯一の場所でした。京都に戻る当日には横浜にも立ち寄りましたが、行きたい場所をすべて回るには時間が足りませんでした。

旅行から帰ったとき、授業で合った友達に別れを告げなければなりませんでした。特に、もう二度と会えるかどうか分からないと思うと、友達が去っていくのを見るのは悲しかったです。でも、いつか友達の国を訪ねてみたいと思っています。また、いつか日本に帰って、日本の友達に会いたいと思っています。留学を通じて自分という人間を理解し、日本で自由に暮らす自信がついたので、いつか日本で仕事ができるようになるかもしれません。

でも、とりあえず今は、日本にお別れを告げなければなりません。

Hello everyone,

Well, this is the end. My 6 months of being an exchange student in Japan end this week. After my exams finished at the end of July, I wanted to travel and do as many things as possible before I returned to the UK. But first, I want to talk about my experience studying in Japan. The last 6 months have been a dream. Before coming to Japan, I was scared because it was my first time coming to Asia and I wasn’t used to the different culture and language. But after doing things like meeting new people and eating different food, I became able to enjoy living in Japan. I was able to build a life here. Of course, there were difficult things that I experienced here, but over time I became accustomed to life in Japan. For example, I became accustomed to things like people riding bikes on sidewalks, people staring at me on the subway, and not being able to find a bin anywhere.

After exams, I went to Okinawa. I wanted to go to Okinawa for a long time because the culture is different and interesting. I was also excited to go to the beach, swim and enjoy the good weather. In reality, Okinawa is hard to see if you don’t have a car. We decided to stay in Naha City because there are lots of things to do and it’s close to the airport, but there’s only one beach. Even so, we went to old shrines, tropical gardens and the second biggest aquarium in the world. We ate new food like Okinawa soba and salt ice cream. We bought many souvenirs, including flowers we put in our hair. Overall, the trip to Okinawa was fantastic.

I went to Tokyo right after Okinawa to meet with my friend from the UK. However, the day I got there, I forgot my wallet, so I didn’t have my residence card, and I was worried I wouldn’t be able to check into my hotel. But actually it was fine, and I was able to stay. My friend wanted to go to Disney and Teamlabs and see places like Shibuya, so the days were long and tiring. My friend then returned home, and I spent more time in Tokyo. I went to Asakusa, Harajuku, and spent a whole day in Kamakura. Kamakura is the one place in Japan that I always wanted to visit because of the famous beaches and the Enoden train. I also visited Yokohama the day I returned to Kyoto, but I didn’t have enough time to see everything I wanted to.

When I came back from my trip, I had to say goodbye to my friends from my classes. It was sad to see them leave, especially because I don’t know if I will ever see them again. But one day I’d like to go visit them in their countries. I would also like to come back to Japan one day to visit my Japanese friends. Through my study abroad experience, I have come to understand myself better and gained the confidence to live freely in Japan, so I might even be able to work there someday.

But for now, I have to say goodbye to Japan.
